Having looked through the Broughton's and connnections to Barlick Area
I am puzzled that the Gravestone below in such a prominent position
does not seem to link with any of the 'branches' already mentioned ??
Any light on the subject

Graham, I think I’ve found the John Broughton you are referring to. This is not on IGI but it is in the parish records at the Preston Records Office. John Broughton was christened 27/9/1761 at Barnoldswick. He was the son of Roger Broughton who was a mason.

I can’t find his marriage at Barnoldswick, but I have found the christening of Jane on 15/1/1786 at Barnoldswick, daughter of John and Elizabeth of Barnoldswick when John was described as a shopkeeper. Again this is not on IGI but is in the parish records. No record of her marriage to John Wills at Barnoldswick

Yes, Graham

Dewhurst was the second son of Dewhurst Broughton and Ann Bradley.  (Their thrid son was William born in 1844 - my GtGrandfather).

Dewhurst was born in 1836 and married Mary Crook.  Their first born was James 1861.  His siblings were Anne 1863, Henry 1865, Ellen 1867, William 1869(died 1869), Rizpah 1870 (died 1950) Joe and John born and died 1873 and John 1875 and died 1953.  I got this information from Dorothy Carthy who was decsended from Ellen who married James Slater Windle.

This was clearly James' second marriage, but I have no other information about him.  Where did you find this?

I think I’ve found the marriage of John Broughton to Bettey Dent on 1/3/1783 at St Bartholemew’s, Colne, by using the IGI. They are a very interesting couple if you follow them through on the parish records.

Roger seems to be the first born, son of Jno and Betty 8/6/1784 at Gisburn.

Then Jane, christened at Barnoldswick 15/1/1786, when John was described as a shopkeeper. Mother called Elizabeth.

Next came Grace 26/8/1787, christened at Thornton, daughter of John and Betty.

Then there is a John, son of John christened at Bracewell 27/7/1788.

Next comes Thomas, christened at Barnoldswick 22/8/1791, son of John, the mason, and Elizabeth of Barnoldswick. The parish records also record at this entry that Grace was born to the same parents and was baptized at Thornton 26/8/1787.

William Dent Broughton was christened 15/2/1795, son of John, the shopkeeper, and Elizabeth of Barnoldswick, he was born 11/1/1795.

Then another Roger, christened at Barnoldswick, 14/1/1800, born 2/10/1799, son of John and Elizabeth of Thornton and John described as a cotton manufacturer.

Then Dorothy was born 11/8/1802 and christened at Barnoldswick 9/1/1803, son of John and Elizabeth of Thornton, he a cotton manufacturer

Robert was christened at Barnoldswick 24/8/1804, son of John and Elizabeth of Thornton, John described as a cotton manufacturer. This was a rather grand 2 line entry in the parish records which I had not seen used for any other entries. It stated that Robert had been born27/2/1804 and had been privately baptised at Thornton. There is also an entry in the Thornton records showing that Robert was christened 20/4/1804, son of John Broughton and Elizabeth Dent.

I like the way Betty’s name changed to Elizabeth as her husband ‘s career advanced. They must have made a bit of money to be able to have a grand 2 line entry in the parish records and such a prominent burial spot. It’s also interesting how they lived in the Thornton parish later in life but came back to Barnoldswick to christen their children. Presumably they lived close to their mill in Earby.

Does anyone have any information about this John Broughton,  born in 1761 and working as a cotton manufacturer, 1800 – 1830, living in Earby?

Nigel, I have no specific info but if John was a manufacturer in 1800 in Earby he'd be in a very small way, perhaps even just a few looms in cottages run by outworkers.  I only know of one water-powered mill in Earby and that was the one above Mill Bridge, didn't last long.  John Turner may be able to shed some light.......

Correction

On 26 3 1860 when William was 21, he married Jane HAMILTON, daughter of Henry HAMILTON & Mary Ann BALFF, in The Parish Church, Bradford. Born on 18 3 1842 in Well Street, Bradford.Occupation: Weaver at marriage.

Mary Ann BALFF should read Mary Ann BALL  (in IGI)

The John Broughton on the prominent gravestone was the first born of Roger Broughton and Grace, christened on 27/9/1761. He had 3 siblings who were christened at Barnoldswick, Mary 19/8/1764, Thomas 24/8/1766 and Richard 26/8/1771. Roger was described as a mason at all these christenings and from Barnoldswick, but in 1771 was described as from Dyhouse.

Roger married Grace Smith at Barnoldswick on 23/5/1761. The banns had been read on 3,10 and 17/5/1761 in the presence of Richard Broughton.

Grace was buried at Ghyll 15/4/1772, 8 months after she gave birth to Richard and presumably aged about 30. She was described as wife of Roger Broughton of Dyhouse (mason). Roger was buried at Ghyll 24/3/1780 described as of Dyhouse, mason. John’s brother was buried at Ghyll 13/11/1784 aged 18, he was described as son of late Roger Broughton of Dyehouse.

So John lost his mother when he was 10, his father when he was 18 and one of his brothers when he was 23. Tough life for him.

John's father, Roger, was probably the one who was christened 26/12/1739 at Barnoldswick, son of John of Barnoldswick, mason. I think his siblings were Thomas 26/8/1721, Sarah 22/2/1725, Mary 24/1/1741, and Rosamund 20/5/1744. All these were at Barnoldswick except Mary who was at Bracewell, and John was described as a mason for all these children except Mary (not stated) and Rosamund (Labourer).

John married Ann Cotes at Barnoldswick 7/12/1721, both were of Barnoldswick and he was a mason.

I can’t find when or where John was born. Logically it would be about 1700, possibly to Richard Broughton Sen and his wife Ann Dickinson of Barnoldswick who married 24/1/1694 at Barnoldswick, but he just isn’t there!

Any help or thoughts would be warmly received

Nigel

I've got this book too!  I think there may be some Broughton references in another of his books about Independency although I've never read it.

Yes Graham, I agree.  There is a big gap betweenSarah and Roger, and Roger more likely to be child of John and Anne Hoyle.

There is another John Broughton who could have married Anne Hoyle in 1739.

On IGI there is a John Broughton son of Richard Broughton born 1712 and christened at Barnoldswick.  He could have been the first born of Richard Broughton Jun who married Rose Cowgill in 1711 on IGI.
