Lancashire Records Office

Post replies here with your Hints & Tips about this resource, How was the service, how easy it was to use, your results etc

LRO - Lancashire Record Office
Bow Lane Preston PR1 2RE,
Tel: 01772 533039
fax 01772 533050.

This is the County centre for archive records in Lancashire, sometimes referred to as the "County Archivists" or "County Archives"

Access is regulated by readers ticket which is valid for 4 years and is part of CARN - the County Archive Research Network so it can be used in any of the participating Record Offices.

Reader's tickets are available on your first visit, but an official document has to be provided showing your name and address. The ideal item is a current driving licence. If a non driver, a utility bill of some kind, electricity, water rates, gas, telephone etc., may be used.

Note that bank books and passports are NOT acceptable as they do not contain, name and address. (If ever you visit and forget your reader's ticket, a one day pass will be issued, but this will only be valid for filmed/fiched items and not original records).

As in all Record Offices, pencils only, may be used. There is a locker system in which you can safely place your belongings. Bags are not allowed in the searchroom.

There is also a small room in which you can eat lunch, bring your own or use the usual machine which dispenses soup, tea, coffee, or chocolate, plus a water machine. It has excellent toilet facilities, and a public telephone.

Laptop computers can be brought in and dictaphones, but always notify staff on arrival. Make sure you are not sitting near to anyone that may be disturbed by it.

There is now a booking system in operation, but do NOT ring in advance. The office will NOT accept telephone bookings, they don't have the staff to deal with that, plus it is seen as fairer to out of county visitors to have bookings on arrival, even if for only 2 hours.

No appointment is needed to visit, but for those familiar with the searchroom, the row of machines near the film drawers are only available for 2 hour periods, 9 - 11, 11 - 1 and so forth, all the other readers are freely available.

For your central information list, you really need the guide to Parish Register holdings at the LRO - called "Finding Folk", this is available in Libraries. It lists all the registers that they hold for each denomination, showing Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, Monumental Inscriptions, any special indexes to or transcriptions that they may have, and also if on the International Genealogical Index (IGI) and gives the dates.

It also carries maps of the Lancashire County Boundaries pre 1974 and 1974 -1998 also a map of the diocese of Chester.

It has a list of useful addresses for genealogists and interesting helpful articles on probate records etc. "Finding Folk" can also be purchased either in book form or CD from LRO.
