MORE ICE, MORE TRUCKS AND MORE DANGER!

The Ice Road Truckers are back and this time our intrepid truckers are swapping frozen lakes for frozen oceans, polar bears, giant moose, wolverines and grizzly bears – risking their lives to deliver their cargo.

Four familiar faces return from last season, hardy ice road veterans Alex & Hugh and Rick & Drew. Our returning drivers will now be working under new management and they will have to prove their worth on unfamiliar and dangerous river and ocean roads.

Every day the truckers risk their lives driving on the ice roads. If a rig breaks through the ice and sinks into the freezing water, the trucker has less than a minute before they will freeze to death. Ice Road Trucking is not for the faint-hearted.

The winter months mean big money for our truckers. They push through brutal temperatures and drive more perilous roads than the rest of the year. The short timeframe, extreme arctic conditions and billions of dollars at stake combine for a high risk, high reward ice road season. They must deliver as many loads as possible before the treacherous ice roads melt.

In series two, the Ice Road Truckers head to the remote communities of Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, over 100 north of the Arctic Circle. Two clients, the Mallik Gas Hydrate Research Project and MGM Energy, rely on the short ice road season as the sole supply for their energy ventures. In about two months these clients need the Ice Road Truckers to move hundreds of heavy and oversized loads before the ice melts!

I have been avidly following this latest series and find it fascinating to watch, not only the bravery (or is that stupidity) of these men who dice with the dangers on the Ice but also their skill in their trade in an unforgiving environment. Well worth a watch!

I love this programme too Doc.  Co-incidentally, there was a news item I caught today which says electricians and plumbers are needed to work in Antarctica.

The most fascinating part for me though has been going on line and reading about some of the work going on up there and some of the history (damn genealogy for sparking that particular interest Laughing) of the region.  I always thought it was kind of just a barren waste land.

It might be one of those "fly on the wall" programmes, which I tend to avoid, but this one does serve a broader educational purpose aswell.

Do you remember the episode where one of the drivers was met regularly by a bird, was it a sort of crow? He used to feed it out of the window as he drove along. Smart bird!
