Just out of curiosity, what's the biggest back-acter being used these days. Norman's big Leibherr was a fair size but I'll bet they've gone past that now. One thing is certain, if Norman was alive he'd have one!

Came across this entry in the Calf Hall Shed Company minute books. This was Wellhouse stack, about 150ft, big dressed stone blocks. Bout £20 a yard on today's prices. How does it compare?

Res. That Mr Joseph Ball’s tender to re-point and repair the [WH]
chimney for 4/- per square yard and to re-fix a new conductor on same
be accepted.

The representative of Mr Joseph Ball of Oldham, chimney repairer, waited on the board requesting payment of his account for pointing and sundry work at WH Chimney amounting to £122-1-3 when it was explained to him that the board were very much dissatisfied with the manner in which the work had been done, he having fixed ladders to the chimney and reported work in hand on the day on which he received instructions to inspect. He also commenced work before receiving orders and the work when finished was not to the satisfaction of the directors. The price charged was exorbitant. He was informed that his account could not be paid until the architect had certified the amount.  August 1895.

Sept 11 1895: Res. That the secretary make an appointment for two directors, the architect and the secretary to meet Mr J Ball the chimney repairer in reference to his account.
September18th. Res. That a cheque be paid to Joseph Ball of Oldham for £120 in respect of chimney repairs.

Quite. Converting money then to today's values is not a precise science but you can usually use a multiple of 100 which is fairly accurate in most cases. So this job would be about £12,000. How far out of line would that be today for pointing a 150ft stack and refurbing the conductor system?

Remind me about Joseph Ball's castle. We've met him before on here haven't we.

Bob, love the 'come-on' quotes for laddering and inspection. Be funny if they found work that needed doing when they got up there....
