EXTRACTS FROM JOHN PICKLES’ NOTEBOOKS. 1935- 1960

If you have an interest in engineering you could well find some light reading below. Lots of clues about local mills and engines.

If you want more information about John Pickles or Henry Brown Sons and Pickles of Barnoldswick search the OG site forums or go to Lulu.com and search for SCG book on the firm.

June 2009. I have published this and other rare texts in a new book, 'Steam Engine Research Resources' available on Lulu.com. It's 250 pages of obscure resources I have found over the yearsand has a big index to make thins easier. If you're into researcing stationary steam you'll find it useful. Lots of information and clues that I have never found anywhere else.

EXTRACTS FROM JOHN PICKLES’ NOTEBOOKS. 1935- 1960

John Albert Pickles was the founder of Henry Brown Sons and Pickles, Barnoldswick in 1929 when Henry Brown and Sons (where he was foreman) collapsed and went into receivership. At one time they had over 120 engines on their books.

The value of these notebooks as far as I am concerned is that they are Johnny Pickles’ hand and were the notebooks he carried round with him when ‘taking particulars’ of a job. The notes are minimal and are mainly small rough sketches, even for the largest job. When you consider that these were all he needed to make whatever it was he was quoting for it is quite amazing. Sometimes there are valuable bits of information about engines. I shall enter each entry but in the main will simply flag up dates and jobs. One thing that has always struck me is the amount of small jobs the firm survived on, it wasn’t all heavy engineering!

Stanley...Just had a quick sken at Mr Pickles list to see if Hendon Mill was mentioned.

It doesn't look like the engine was on his list, so I wonder who did repair work on it.

Anyway, ..What a list to transcribe . You definitely deserve a couple of those brisket sammies !

You missed air pump repair 1948. Don't forget there were other engineering firms including the engine makers. As they gradually dropped out B&P got more and more work.
