There are two topics on here at present concerning the impact of war on Barnoldswick, specifically World War One. Like many of us I appreciate that anything related to War is unpleasant and possibly best avoided. The fact remains however that Wars have taken place and indeed still do, and for many of us, although any thing to do with the subject can be painful, there have been terrible losses due to conflict right here. During research on this subject there are a number of things that require some measure of further work if those who paid the final price for our today are not to be forgotten. It was muted a few weeks ago by a member that an updated version of an historic publication might be a good idea. The original book was produced during the First World War to commemorate the Men and Women of Craven who gave their lives to us and this country, and a copy was given to all of those who served and survived, and the the families of those who did not. The information contained in the original book was gathered at a difficult time and is in some cases inaccurate. Thanks to the tireless work of a group headed by Mr Chris Foster of CPGW, much of the information has been, and still is, being updated. It has been my privilege to be able to use this work to build a picture of the impact that the War had on Barnoldswick and its inhabitants, this effort being still ongoing. The original objective was to have a publication ready for the centenary of WW1, this we still hope to achieve. During research, something else became clear and I believe it has to be addressed. The Towns War Memorial has 285 Names relating to the Great War, and yet more Names are coming to light that some of us believe should be appended to the Memorial. What we need is a small number of those who care, to commit themselves in whatever way they can, to this end. A small Commitee of people who have the knowledge or skills that may ease the passage of what is hoped for. So if you wish to help, please put yourselves forward. There will in the future be information posted on here concerning other local areas, so wherever you live, if you think you can help, it will be highly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your radiator woes Peter. On the matter of your expected visit, I assume the wheel must have come off somewhere. Anyway with the information from Glenys, I think we have enough to start to formulate a strategy.
I think all interested parties should exchange contact detais ( email and telephone number) so that when we get the ball rolling we can circulate information easily. We could do this when we have our first meeting. With regard to that and the time of year it may be as well to do that after Christmas rather than before. Anyone else any thoughts on that?

I think I can safely say that a few thou of the correct paint makes little difference to a radiators efficiency. Ian I will PM my contact details to you. Now its back to waiting for the new settees to arive, anywhere between 0800 and 1900 Wow!

In Your Family Tree mag this month it says the Sunday telegraph has launched a campaaign to preserve and protect the nation's war memorials. It has 5 key aims - to allow the use of lottery funds to restore the memorials - at present strict rules make it difficult and don't allow schemes costing less than £3000. It is calling for stronger protection for memorials in the planning system, and the remaining three relate to the growing problem of vandalism, tighter laws on scrap metal dealing to deter theft and longer sentences for those convicted. The War Museum is compiling a full inventory of war memorials (there isn't one at present).

and of course there is also this organaisation that we are using for informationa and guidance.
War Memorials Trust
Any publicity that raises the profile of the memorials and their value in society would be welcome. There have been numerous stories around in the media for the last few years of vandalism and theft of artifacts. The War Memorials trust works in partnership with the Smartwater Foundation which is one avenue of protection for metalwork. Unfortunately nothing will protect if the dealer is dodgy and puts profit before conscience.
It would be a good use for lottery funding if that could be brought about although our project will probably well exceed the £3000 minimum so it could be worth looking into.

In the absence of more suggestions for a project name, how about this slightly modified version of one of Colin's. "More Barlickers Remembered" ?
I also believe that this should now be put to the local press. There is strong evidence for groups "A" and "B", group "C" could be added at a later date when further research has been carried out. With this in mind, I will start putting together a basic presentation tomorrow, if anyone has any ideas that may help with this please post on here as soon as is possible.

I like that Peter but think we should incorporate something to do with the memorial in the title then people know exactly what the project is about.
I can see the benefit of a launch to the press but think it may stand a chance of getting lost in the Christmas and New Year mele' if we do it now. It may be better to get a fuller picture of exactly what the requirement is going to be from a financial point of view, decide how we are going to approach this (which is going to be a major factor) and then formulate our press campaign. Once launched I think we will need to keep the impetus up with regular updates if we can.
Thanks to your efforts we have a very good start on what will be the majority of additions to the memorial. We must make contingency for any others. I have no idea yet on how to research for additional losses in the later conflicts, any suggestions for this would be welcome. We may have to "buy in" to some subscriptions to research fully, how we fund this if it is required will need to be sorted out.
I personally see it panning out something like this:
Continue gathering as much relevant information as we can in what remains of this year.
Call all interested parties together at a mutally agreeable time in the new year for inaugural face to face meeting.
Everyone brings to the table what we have so far. Formulate plans for further research and allocate tasks. Develop press strategy and release an initial statement of intention.
I don't think we can ask for financial support or sponsorship until we have a very good idea of what the costs of the project are likely to be. We can't do that until we know exactly what the proposal will entail.
The War Memorial Trust recommends that we research into the history of the memorial and include this as a pre-amble to the proposal. I have never seen any history on the Barlick memorial but wonder if the history society has anything. I will check to see if there is anything held at the library.
I think the proposal then will need a basic statement of intent and why we want to see the work done.
Names for inclusion (backed up with research information).
Proposed building works or method of addition.
Plans or artist impression of what any addition would look like
Costings for same (multiple)
Lists of sponsors or financial contributors.
Listings of proposed contractors.
List of supporters to the proposal.
The proposal will need to be written so that the facts are easy to digest and can be assimilated quickly by the comittee. Have we anyone with experience of formulating proposals?
We will need to pitch to the Town Council to get their support as well as the main official proposal to the West Craven Area Committee. We will need to look at the meeting shedules for these bodies to decide on when to pitch.
This is only my initial thoughts on how we should proceed. I would like to see any other suggestions that the other contributors to the thread can bring.

i totally agree with you on your proposals. what council funding is available will certainly depend on the strength of the case made to both the town council and the west craven area committee. since the actual spend will be in the next financial year then we have time to formulate a cast iron bid for funding. David W and i are fully supportive of a desire to updae and preserve the memory of Barnoldswick's fallen.
I believe your plan is sound, we have two geographical sites to consider, the Cenotaph and the Memorial Gardens. Perhaps we should think about how we provide a central unified focus for commemoration. should the two sites be combined? and if so where?
BTC has already applied for funding to refurbish the Memorial Gardens and is actively pursuing this proposal. I personally am looking for support to provide alternative sources to sustain the protection and preservation of an updated Roll of Honour.
Your initial thoughts are sound, and are a very good approach to this project.

I agree with most of that and I am willing to be guided in whatever way there is that may prove our efforts to be successful. What I had in mind for the press was in the way of a "Taste" of what is happening. At the moment only those who look in here will have any idea, I believe that a look at what is planned may gain us some support. On the research side, now that I have a fair idea of the names that may qualify, I can search further for extra evidence. The project name is not an easy to reconcile as I believe it needs to be minimal and not pompous sounding, "The missing names on Barlick War Memorial" is a bit lengthy but says what we are about, "Barlick Memorials missing names" says much the same but is shorter, over to you "A" Team.

I'd be tempted to call yourselves something which encompasses both the men already on the memorial and those that aren't . Something like The Barlick War Memorial Group or the BWMG for short..
