LTP AWARD

I got mail yesterday from a lady who informed me “that the Association of Industrial Archaeologists have decided to give you their annual Fieldwork and Recording Initiative Award which we shall give as a Life Time Achievement Award for your excellent work on the Lancashire Textile Project".

I knew I was nominated but had let it drop off the radar because the idea of getting a national award seemed so preposterous. Well, it might be but they have decided that I’m the man!

In truth, this award is not for me, it’s for all the ordinary people who opened up and proved that not only were they articulate but they had a wonderful story to tell on many levels. Apart from being a goldmine of technical information about the processes and management of cotton weaving by steam, they gave a very detailed and clear picture of the family, social and economic life of the town.

Most of them are dead now and my only regret is that we can’t hire a bus and all descend on the awards ceremony in August. Just imagine that…..

The bottom line is that I was in the right place at the right time and was able to give them a voice. All their lives they were the powerhouse of the national economy and totally ignored. Nobody can ignore them now, their testimony is spread all over the world and will survive. So any award I get pales into insignificance beside that fact, they are on the record, their story is told and as they are the most complete source of information on the subject they will be remembered.

If there’s one thing I’d like to see come out of all this it is that others should do the same thing, get out there and record your grandparents, give them a voice and do all you can to spread the information. It’s the best memorial they could have.

(I've had mail from Colin Myers who says I am being smug. OK, he's right, I do deserve it and it's nice to know that a lot of people will take notice who wouldn't have been interested before. But the main points above still hold true, I always knew I was doing it to give the workers a voice, and about time too! But thanks Colin for the endorsement.)

(Colin has taken me to task.... I misread his mail and what he actually said was that I had every right to be smug. Apologies for sloppy work. He's still right!)

Mail this morning from the library at Lancaster University askig permission to feature the LTP in an exhibition they are going to do. Guess what I told them! I know posts like this make me sound like a smug b*****d but it's so good to know that it's being used for research. The site has a big input into this and I am so grateful to Doc for all the work he has put into it. Just what tinternetwebthingy was built for!

I don't think you sound smug. I just think any piece of  careful resarch painstakingly transferred onto the net is fantastic and should be applauded..we learn so much and go on learning because of peoples efforts like this. so thank you for the hours put in..i keep trying to read the calf hall shed transcript but it freezes my laptop evey time I try to open it..or maybe it just takes a long time to load?

Thanks to you all. Belle email me at the address below and give me a postal address and I'll burn you a CD. I'll just send the text, you can get the pics off OG. You do know that you can access the LTP transcripts individually by clicking on the logo don't you? I did a post about access, I'll bring it back to the top.

Unfortunately not Gus but I think you already knew that! The exposure is the reward, the more people know about it the more good it will do. There's still a lot of misconceptions about the textile trade and the Barlick workers can set them right if people take the time to read what they have to say. After all, they are the real experts, not the historians!

Thanks Stanley but no need or the CD i have managed to access the Calf hall shed topic. i read the LTP when I first cam on here as it was part of the reason I found this sie in the first place, but it is nice to dip back into it form time to time...think the audio idea suggested on another topic would be a great asset if the tapes are clean enough.

Tapes are perfect. Masters at Lancaster and first copy at NW Sound Archive at Clitheroe. All on reel to reeel. Copies available from them. Think of the time it would take to transfer them to digital archive! Copy CHSC minutes and transfer to your hard drive?

Just caught up on this thread , Stanley. You must feel very proud of the LTP and rightly so.....Have you got any information about when Lancaster University are putting on the exhibition ? (I have friends in Ulverston who would be interested).......

As a by the way , is the Textile Project an on-going thing ? I have a box of  books from Bradley Nelson & Co.  (Hendon Mill) that I shall be having a look at again soon , the contents of which may be of interest......One is the "Bible" of cloth specifications my Grandfather manufactured .....

Brad. you're right, I quite like the LTP. It's ongoing in so far as that many people are using it for research and study. No formal structure. As for your books, make sure they go to a specialist library like the Chetham in Manchester or similar. Have a word with the textile Institute in Manchester. Use this LINK. They will know the best repository for them.
