Well folks, we are now running the database on Microsoft SQL server, which was one of the main reasons why we upgraded to our new hosting package. Microsoft SQL Server is a more robust and well suited relational database product than the old Microsoft Access. It will stand us in good stead for the future growth of OGFB.

The poor old Microsoft Access database which as served us well for the past 4 years was creaking at the seams, with a database size of over 200Mb and getting hit with well over 10,000 page views a day was a big ask.

Microsoft SQL server is new territory for me, I am having to learn as I go, it's a lot more complicated than the old MSAccess, but I'm getting there. After 4 attempts tonight or should I say early this morning, I finally managed to transfer the old database across without loosing any of the valuable information. (I Hope)

I am having to test the site in real-time, so if you come across any weird error messages, please cut & paste them into this topic so that I can keep track of them and deal with them as they occur.

Now that the information is finally across into the new database all that needs to be done now is to fine tune the Microsoft SQL server application to maximise its performance, in particularly the building of the indexes for what is called "Full Text Indexing", once this is completed then the site's search facility will be FAST, what typically took say 30 seconds to search for in the old days will now take under a second to accomplish. Not only will the site & forum search facilities speed up but the site's speed in general will increase.

I will keep you all informed of my progress has and when I accomplish these bits and pieces.

Right then, it's time to get back to the chapter on "Full Text Indexing" a light read at this time of day Confused

Tried to update my blog, got this:

ADODB.Recordset error '800a0cc1'

Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal.

/SkyBlog.asp, line 539

At first I thought the OGFB police had felt my collar owing to my bolshie attitudes but it seems others are getting the same message.

Also, and I hate to mention it, the site is markedly slower all round since you put us on that squealing server thing.

Tested other websites and they load quickly, so it's unlikely to be my server/world usage etc. Hopefully this is just down to Doc's temporary tinkering?

I've had no errors but the site does seem slower. It may be the network here, I'll try again when I get home.....

  ADODB.Recordset error '800a0cb3'

Current Recordset does not support bookmarks. This may be a limitation of the provider or of the selected cursortype.

/SkyBlog.asp, line 529

Couldn't access my blog just. Got the above error.

The timeout errors and a very slow site were due to a program on the server eating too much memory, leaving none for the webservices, I've sorted that as well.

Well thats all the reported errors taken care of, until some more crop up. Now all that needs to be done is the fine tuning of the server to increase its performance and to sort the site and forum search facilities out. I'll be working on these today.

At the moment the site seems reasonably quick except the loading of the homepage, I think I need to do some tweaks with the content and layout to try and improve its loading time.

I get a message when I post a reply, it doesn't give me much time to read it. BUT, I think we have had it before. I will see if it does it when I post this.
The answer to that was nooooo.

Some of my posts go in all right but on the way they report 'a transport error.  Too quick to copy and it seems to work OK anyway.  Site is a lot faster than of late.  You are evidently getting there Doc.  Thanks.

The transport error that you are getting is because I have had to turn the email off. When you post a reply to a topic that other members have subscribed to, the software attempts to notify them by email, because it's turned off it generates that message.

Nothing to worry about, I'm working on the email side as we speak

PS. The speed of the site is getting better all the time.  I should say it's faster now than it has ever been.  Is this SQL beginning to have an effect as it indexes?
