There are two topics on here at present concerning the impact of war on Barnoldswick, specifically World War One. Like many of us I appreciate that anything related to War is unpleasant and possibly best avoided. The fact remains however that Wars have taken place and indeed still do, and for many of us, although any thing to do with the subject can be painful, there have been terrible losses due to conflict right here. During research on this subject there are a number of things that require some measure of further work if those who paid the final price for our today are not to be forgotten. It was muted a few weeks ago by a member that an updated version of an historic publication might be a good idea. The original book was produced during the First World War to commemorate the Men and Women of Craven who gave their lives to us and this country, and a copy was given to all of those who served and survived, and the the families of those who did not. The information contained in the original book was gathered at a difficult time and is in some cases inaccurate. Thanks to the tireless work of a group headed by Mr Chris Foster of CPGW, much of the information has been, and still is, being updated. It has been my privilege to be able to use this work to build a picture of the impact that the War had on Barnoldswick and its inhabitants, this effort being still ongoing. The original objective was to have a publication ready for the centenary of WW1, this we still hope to achieve. During research, something else became clear and I believe it has to be addressed. The Towns War Memorial has 285 Names relating to the Great War, and yet more Names are coming to light that some of us believe should be appended to the Memorial. What we need is a small number of those who care, to commit themselves in whatever way they can, to this end. A small Commitee of people who have the knowledge or skills that may ease the passage of what is hoped for. So if you wish to help, please put yourselves forward. There will in the future be information posted on here concerning other local areas, so wherever you live, if you think you can help, it will be highly appreciated.

Thank You.

Thomo.

Hi Thomo,

Please Count me into this group of people who are willing to help. I have for some months now been expressing concern to the town council that our War Memorial (and the Memorial Gardens) need to be updated.
If i am correct then 1966 has been the only year since the end of hostilities in WWII that British Forces have not officially been involved in conflict somewhere in the World.
With the town's justifiably proud record of service to Queen and Country I have always felt that those who have lost their lives in conflict deserve a more fitting recognition and our old and tired memorials to them really do need to be rejuvinated.

kindest Regards

Good morning Ken, and welcome aboard. You are right, it needs a facelift. Right, do we have any more volunteers? it is not intended to mega time consuming or "heavy", but when dealing with authorities, a small group of determined people may stand a better chance than an individual. Thank you.

Hi Klondyke 49 - wasn't it 1968 when there were no soldiers killed in action, rather than the UK not being involved in a war? Maybe someone could clarify - I'm not sure where to look. Perhaps I've misheard or misinterpreted things.

Peter - I would like to get involved but I'll have to limit it to helping with the book. I have so many calls on my time these days that if I'm not careful I'll end up attempting everything and achieving nowt.

Count me in Peter, I'll do as much as I can from this end to help if its required.  However I don't want to tread on anybodies toes down in Barlick, if they feel an outsider is interfering .

Regards
Chris

You can count me in of course Peter. I have mailed Bob at Earby History Society for his experiences with the Earby memorial. I'm going to have a look at the results today as I'm going past when I finish work. I have not heard back from Bob yet but will update when I have more news. I will ring the council as well this afternoon for information.

Good Man Ian, and now we are four plus Heather on the publication side. I believe the time may be right to get in touch with the press. At present there are two groups of names, 6 in group "A" the almost certain, and 8 in group "B" highly possible, this leaves another 21 to examine more closely. At present 5 of group "A" are not on any local memorial, just one to check.

The Earby war memorial was designated as "grade 2 listed" in 2009, so it couldn't be disturbed. The finished "Armed Forces Memorial" is a paved area with a dedication stone incorporated and the new names commemorated on kerbstones around it, leaving flexibility for any future additions. A grant was obtained from the Parish Council and appeals were made to local businesses and organisations. Nine new names were included, their deaths ranging from 1900 to 1995.

One thing that has crossed my mind as we push this forwards. I think we should also give some thought to any later additions that may be required also.

Are we sure that the WWII names and subsequent conflicts covered?

WWII, Korea, Aden, Falklands, Kosovo, etc.I think we should really check them all to the best of our abilities

I looked at the Earby memorial in Sough Park on my way home. The solution Wendy perfectly describes for their listed structure may be an idea for ours in Barlick as well with the fact that we know there is insuffcient room on the existing structure to add the additional names for WWI.

All points to think about as we get organised for the task ahead.

Very true that Ian. When dealing with WW1 it has to be remembered that many records were destroyed in the bombing of WW2, and when dealing with WW2 and subsequent conflicts the local toll was not as high. That will project No 2. Chris may be able to advise on how to approach that one.
I am working on group "C" two of the 21 are on Earby Memorial, the other 19 are again not any known local Memorial.

I have made initial contact with Pendle council regarding responsibility for the memorial and if any policies or procedures are already in place. The gent I need to speak with is not available at the moment but our information request will be passed on to him.

The person for initial contact is Bob Careswell who provided us with Wilfreds details. I had a bit of an inkling that the memorial may come under his remit as well. He has all my contact details so I will wait to see what he comes back with. I know from my earlier dealings with him that he is very helpful.

A good starting point I think Ken. We need to ascertain if any of these were from Barlick. When you look at a list like this it brings home the fact that 1968 was the only year that the nation did not loose anyone in armed conflict. There are conflicts here that the vast majority of people if you asked them would have little or no knowledge of.

The National Memorial Arboretum is well worth a visit. It could be worth pursuing what additional records they may hold.

I have had a response from Robert Careswell apparently I need to speak with someone in Estates. I will follow it up.

Thats great looks as if the ball is starting to roll.

Peter you've mentioned a book . Perhaps the Heritage Lottery Fund can help with a grant for that . Its the same body that gave CPGW the funding to proceed with the project , we couldn't have done even half of what we did without them .
At this moment they're looking for Great war projects to fund and I think the idea of the book would go down well with them.
