Our 'national anthem' makes no mention of the nation.  It's an ode to a family.  A bit like Old MacDonald Had a Farm.

So I'll have nothing to do with it thank you.  Not that I've anything against the family.  Some seem decent enough; some rather less so.  But I've not met any of them or engaged with them on forums like this, or by letter, or in a public Q&A session, so I can't say more than that.  The Queen might be a game old dear for all I know, and certainly her mum's fondeness for Dubonnets and Gin (''Large if you please.  Oh go on then, another..but just the one...'') suggested she'd stand her round in the pub.  But I can't really say for sure.

Just as I silently wish any strangers I see getting married at a church I pass my best wishes, so too the happy couple in April.  It would be churlish not to.  But you can forget any Cameronian thumping of the table and exclamations of 'Yesss' from me.

Richard you of course are entitled to your opinion.  I can't help but think of you, Bradders and Stanley banished to a corner ( Stanley just think how boring your history reading would be without the freeloading royals) to discuss your position, while many of us pray for the future of the country!

Found it interesting today to hear that some "rescue" flights in/out of Libya were cancelled today..because the insurance company thought the risk too high.

Save your prayers Herb .....there's not a lot wrong with this country , actually.

Unlike your good-self , I'd still rather live here than anywhere else. (and I have the choice) ........With it's beauty , it's living traditions  and it's largely tolerant people.

It's sometimes spoilt by those  who aren't wise enough to move with the times , but Hey ho......nowhere's perfect eh !

This has been the tone of my posts on this thread , but I fear they have been misunderstood ........(nothing unusual there of course, given the constantly bombastic attitude of some of our participants)

Bradders first I refer you to your comment about the anthem "like all boomers we just did it" I think that says a lot about people not moving with the times or not knowing what they should be doing.

I find your posts have softened somewhat, but you cannot leave them without firing your usual barbs.  Keep trying and you'll get it right eventually.

cheers

If we are banished to a corner it'll be a big one. Welcome to the Naughty Step Richard. I agree completely and like to see weddings, never did me any harm! By the way, Vera and I paid for our own out of our wages.

Herb, the royal family don't feature at all in my history since Victoria and the early ones were anything but boring so I wouldn't miss them at all.

I see Gadafi is blaming the parents now! The sooner the situation reaches a resolution the better. Biggest problem is of course that no government has a Plan 'B' for libya, the experts seem to have been caught wrong-footed. Watch the oil price.

The Breakfast BBC caught my attention this morning, mischief making over Libya and the evacuation.

I wonder what all these People did in Libya ?? and who they worked for, and more importantly why did the employers not do more. Questions never asked
Or is this like Egypt were the vast majority of people flown out of Egypt were Egyptians, who just happened to have a British Passport. Questions never asked
Oil Workers I can understand, but the rest just left it very late to leave.
With regards to the poor evacuation.
Lets add a bit of content.
It is difficult to land a Hercules on Sand, we only used light planes to fly into the desert and if we used larger aircraft it was always to a Military Strip, which currently we don't know who controls.
The SAS on stand by now that really cracks me up. They are always on Stand By.
I wonder what we would propose they parachute in ?? how many should go. How do we back them up ?? and more importantly how do we get them out ??
Someone needs to get a hold of the BBC Reporters and tell them they should Report the News not try to make it by asking Ministers questions that can't be answered on T V

With you all the way on that Frank, among those desperate to leave, there appeared to be a lot of couples with the type of baggage normally seen on holidays. Anyone who has seen the news cannot have failed to see the large statue of a great fist with a US aircraft crushed in it, much noise has been made about our response, imagine the noise there would have been if a plane had been shot down, in this case I believe caution to be not only wise but paramount. Yes, the Britain Bashers are having a field day.

The increase in the cost of car insurance caught my eye today. A 33% increase on last year, robbers!

Am I correct in this ?
As far as I know not one UK citizen has been been harmed in all this turmoil across the Middle East.

My buddy Don, oil worker  in Lybia, i communicated with him on Mon & Tues, then no contact, went to the pub at tea time yesterday Thurs, and there he was at the with him only a small bag with chocolate & muesli bars for instant food if held up, paid a cab driver a fist full of Dinars to get him as close to the airport as possible, about a Kilometre from the airport they hit the queue, he walked through pouring rain over people lying on the ground tring to sleep or resting after waiting to get into the airport, most of them had everything but the kitchen sink, he arrived at the airport doorand because he was travelling light he was allowed in, he was scheduled out on the Irish flight that was'nt,

Hextalked his way into the first class departure lounge, where he was met by a tuxedo dressed man offering drink and food, there was background music and life was just as though all the turmoil below did'nt exist !! having missed the Irish flight he got on to a bus for Turkish depature plane, next to this plane was a plain white plane no name on it, it was a flight organized by BP, he wangled his way on to that to Gatwick and was home within 12 hours Avery resourceful chappy is Don

Herb , quote me if you like , but please be accurate . I did not write the words you attribute to me .  (the comment in question was 23/02/2011 1:39:23. if you'd like to check) Even as a paraphrase it's wrong.

In the days that I was refering to , in that post  , the "National anthem" at the end of the film show was only a nod in the direction of loyalty. One verse , and I never remember anyone joining in !.... I DO remember many of our so called "Elders and betters" leaving in a hurry before the titles had finished ....Funny that , you'd think they would want to set an example , and of course they did ......

We moved on by realising that we had been conned into making an insincere gesture ....and stopped doing it .

I DO keep the television  on at the end of a Grand-Prix , but only if Ferrari win.........their tune is the funniest !

( If you want to see barbs , take a look at poor Anni's  "Doggy"  page and the comment about butter.....talk about "starting a fight in an empty room ".......it's a disgrace.)
