Jack is making a lot of friends in Barlick. I don't know why, maybe it's his face markings but people on the street feel the need to stroke him. Women in particular fall for him.

As you know, I had a bad experience with Joe, the lurcher from Irlam. I was very wary about taking another feral dog on but I'm beginning to think that Jack will make it as a member of the team. He's good at coming to hand when off the lead but I'm not saying he'd take any notice if he was distracted.

He's fast and very agile and seems to have lungs as big as a bucket, I haven't heard him pant as though he's out of breath even after a hard run. As for jumping, he's like a cat. Here he is on his favourite perch. Someone asked me the other day why I don't stop him doing it. It's easier to clean the drainer twice a day!

[This topic started as Jack's blog but in Jan 2008 I had to put him down because he started attacking strange dogs.  His successor is Black Jack. a Patterdale pup, no point erasing Jack the Lurcher from history....  he was a good dog and what happened wasn't his fault.  He had too bad a start.....]

Did you read the article about the Sedentary Lifestyle (bbc or daily mail), anyway, mentally or physically, it can't be said of you Stanley.

I saw young Jack sat patiently on the kerb waiting to cross the road this morning. He's a fine looking hound.
I did have to smile when I first looked out the window as I thought I saw Stanley with a small brown piglet, it was only when Jack stood up to cross the road he looked like his picture.........

Funny how some people who knew Jack well have walked past me on the street.  Nice thing is that when I tell people what happened thay are universally supportive.  Mind you, he's got a very impressive moutful of teeth, even Mrs Marsh commented on it.  From the way he investigates grids and holes I reckon he could be a good ratter.  Must talk to my mate Philip.......  He's doing very well on the lead Kev and walks faster than Jack.  The distractions get fewer as he learns about the world.  If he does see something that interests him he puts the brakes on and has a good think.  There's definitely a little brain in there.  I'm enjoying him but I don't think I'd have built 4 engines in 6 months under this regime!

We both have a pee at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning......  He pops out into the front garden and is getting used to the idea.....  It only took him a minute this morning....

Well worth the effort.

Save time and both use the front garden.
Can't get Misty to put her nose out with the wind/hail/rain/snow.
She didn't like the sheet lightning yesterday either. Nolic

Jack doesn't seem to worry.  The thunder yesterday didn't seem to phase him either but a sharp noise while we are out walking will stop him in his tracks but I think that's just curiosity and the newness of everything.  We'll see....

Two things I've noticed about Jack the last couple of days; he's cocked his leg twice to pee instead of squatting and he can easily jump on my knee first time.  Up to now he's had to have a bit of help.  I reckon that he's getting more confidence and better muscle with all the walking.

Jack is learning fast.  It took 18months before the pooch gained enough confidence to lollop across the field - but she was 6 1/2 when she was rescued from the cage.

Anyway, I am enjoying reading about your new life together - it brings a warm smile to my soul that you have found each other Laughing

Mine as well Anni.  He's a far more sociable dog than Jack the Lurcher.  He gets the need at odd times for attention and just jumps on my knee.  Exactly like a child......  Doesn't need much, just a quick cuddle and he's off again.

"Save time and both use the front garden."

With that comment in mind, I have just the thing for you, Stanley. The popular scientist Adam Hart Davis has a "straw loo" in his garden as part of his attempts at sustainability etc. It's intended only for urine and consists of a bale of straw in a plastic sack, open at the top. You simply pee on it. It works better if you stand the bale so the ends of the straw point upwards - it absorbs the urine better that way. After much use, it is composted and dug into the garden.

All men visiting his house are invited to use it. Women have the option but he warns them that it could be a prickly experience.

I heard that as well....  sensible.  Another observation about Jack.  When I got the towel to dry him off he hid.  Doesn't mind being rubbed down but the sight of me advancing with the towel frightens him.  I reckon someone has been hitting him with a towel or cloth, perhaps when he's peed inside.....  Trick is to take him to the towel, then he's OK.  It's like detective work......

PS. Weighed him yestrday and he's 18lbs.  Put a pound on in ten days and biggest part of that is muscle, his ribs are still there......  Exercise and good grub, that's what puts a foundation under kids and dogs......
