Hello my name is Colin Brittain, author of "Into The Maelstrom" The Wreck of the Rohilla. I was encouraged to post to this website by another keen member (H. Sheldrick) if I ever had any queries about Barlick members involved in the loss of the hospital vessel. I do hope that this post is within the correct topic title and apologise if not (perhaps the administrator could move it if not?).

I have recently acquired a high resolution scan taken from a postcard. The people featured are a mix of Whitby / Barnoldswick and I am trying to do my best to name those on the photograph. Of course as the author I should have ready access to additional photographs that may help and I have managed to name a few. I have posted this here to see if any existing members may have some clue as to who the personnel are. I believe the photograph was captured at one of the Rohilla's anniversary.  I am sorry the image is missing as I have not yet cracked the way of ading an image, I will of course update this post when I have.

Finally if anyone has a query of their own for me about the Rohilla I would be happy to receive them. My passion for the tragic story is a s strong today as when I wrote my book if not stronger. In closing I would just like to add what a very comprehensive website this is.

My Regards

Hi Colin

Great to see you on here.

I apologise for not getting a move on with the song, but certain developments have taken place - will let you know what's what, when I know myself!

If you want to email the photo to my private address, I'll post it on this website for you. Hopefully that will save you a lot of bother. As I've said before, posting photos on OGFB is one of the Dark Arts.

Cheers

Heather

PS: Everybody - Colin's book is very good, by the way - well worth getting your hands on a copy.Go to Top of Page

Not only is it one of the dark arts, but it has a spell woven into it that means although you may have successfully posted a picture once, you can never remember what you did....

Welcome Colin.

Colin, welcome to the site.  Remind us all of the broad details of the Rohilla.  If you want to get the pic up easily just mail me the scan and I'll pop it in for you.  Take no notice of Belle, she is but a poor unfortunate woman......

I think there are a few topics buried somewhere in the bowels of OGFB all about the Rohilla, (but it wouldn't do any harm to outline the story again).

Also, I have a copy of Colin's book if anyone local wants to borrow it (before buying your own of course - don't want to diddle Colin out of his well-earned royalties)

Until such time as I can overcome the processfor adding a photograph image to a post I have created an alternative method via an individual web page on my personal website that has the aforementioned photograph on it. The webpage in question can be accessed at

http://www.eskside1.freeserve.co.uk/ogfb.htm

If it is not asking too much may I ask you to visit the page in a hope that you can help me. Please rest assured this is a genuine web page and not some daft scam that aseem to haunt the internet. I apologise for working this way and hope to rectify the addition of an image to the post itself soon.

Many Thanks

Colin

Sorry I didn't get round to posting these pics sooner, Colin.

I'll leave it up to you to fill in any background info and captions.

Firstly many thanks for uploading the images to this post.
The first is that of a sketch created for me by the late John Littlewood, one of Whitby's well known characters, his work adorns many of the town’s public houses where his expenses were refunded back via the bar. I had John sketch the illustration from a painting by Tim Thompson. John made a wonderful job of the recreation and I use it quite a bit.

The second illustration / photograph was the reason for my first post and one that I am hoping forum members can help me with. The photograph depicts what I believe to be Whitby folk standing alongside people from Barnoldswick. I feel it was taken around one of the anniversaries to the loss of the Rohilla, although I am of course open to any suggestions / corrections.

I think that the front row is largely made up of those survivors from the S. John Ambulance Brigade and whilst I have my suspicions about whom each individual is I would welcome forum comments. Equally if anyone can identify any of the other persons I would welcome the feedback. I have a substantial collection of illustrative material and whilst I am aiming to go through it in a hope of correctly identifying the people in the photograph it can never hurt to get an external viewpoint.

I am planning a comprehensive website dedicated to the Rohilla and am currently working on the site content. I am still hoping to upload a number of photographs as time goes by all related to the Rohilla and those involved in its loss. If anyone has anything they would like to ask, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best Regards

Colin Brittain

It just goes to show that you should always caption your photographs - you never know who might be interested in years to come.

I'm ashamed to say I never follow my own advice on this one.Go to Top of Page
