As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

the interveiw went well, the tutor was really nice and was interested in what i do, but she explained that i need to discover different aspects of art and to push me to see exactly what i am capable of doing in everything. glass work, pottery, sculpting, photography, life drawing, painting and the history of art. seeing as all that i have done to date is all off my own, i was shown around all the different work rooms and what i liked about it was that it reminded me of Aardmans and their work space.
mum had already checked the art school reputation and it is very very good, it has had the top award for the last 3 years, so i trust this is correct.
at the open evening the tutor asked me to bring some work other than my portfolio to the interveiw that was out of my comfort zone, to use my imagination and to produce a completely different peice of art work as she was worried that i would be stuck in just doing my own thing and wouldnt want to expand my thinking.... yeah bring it on, just what i want, give me something to prove i can do it

so i went home went out in the garden to find some inspiration, i picked up a pebble, i was thinking how heavy it was and blunt, so i thought of opposites, like a needle, light and sharp. then with my mind whirling i thought of the saying you cant get blood out of a stone. so i came up with this. a bleeding pebble being stitched up.  it took me 3 hours, that was also what the tutor asked me to do, something that i could produce in a short amount of time.

then with the pebble still in mind i spent another hour making a model sculpture.
i was thinking about the weight of the pebble again and then got to thinking about how women always complain about their weight and how tv, mags portray slim women as models so i thought of doing a over weight person depressed with its weight with the pebble simbulizing its feeling of not much movement and hopelessness so
i piled 3 pebbles on top of one another x2 to make some heavy bulky legs, and then with clay made the body, this took me an hour and a half.
the tutor was pleased and amazed that i had done exactly what she had asked and offered me a place straight away, i get the feeling back from her she is as excited as me, think we are going to get on fine

ive also been in the paper again last night about going for gold, the sponcership, ive got all the trails coming up next month, not so sure about it yet as they havent made it clear just what they want to do with my education along side the taylor made programme which is worrying me a bit, my dream would be they would give me the sponcership that just ran along side my art school and training. the weird thing is if you get this scholarship you get the best throws coach to coach you. hes already my coach LOL so im still confused but no doubt it will all become clear soon.
and dont worry belle i take what everyone says and then mull it over and think about them and then make my own desition, its good to hear others point of veiw as it might be something ive not thought of, so thankyou i always appreciate your comments, good or bad x

anyway today was my very last day of school and i cant tell you how happy i am, the last 10 or so weeks have been hell and ive hated every second as i didnt want to be there, but i got through it and ive sat all my exams, i think ive done well considering my mental state!!! haha
wow what a long post

Conty, what a momentous occassion, your last day of school! It also happens to be my youngest's last day, though there are still exams to be done. I put my first child into school over thirty years ago so it marks the end of an era for me too! Love your stone and needle picture, you are going to be fine!

That wasn't a long post, just a satisfying one! Sounds as though you handled the interview well and found a fan! She's right of course, now is the time for exploring, who knows you may be the next big thing on the macrame scene! It all sounds good and the best thing is that you are enthused, if you can't feel like that at your age you'll never get the buzz again. Best of luck Conor and please keep us posted. (Ribbon pics still doing it for me....)

ive been working solid on this drawing the last 2 days and its taking forever! i am going to seriously think about doing another pencil drawing this BIG again,

I just hope its worth it when its finished, if i havent retired before its done!! haha

While your on the subject of going to art exhibitions, i went to one on sunday, it was in twigworth manor house nr cheltnham ( a bit of a journey but i was at a competition near there) so we went in on the way home and i am soo glad we did, it was a wildlife exhibition with some beautiful work on display.
In the manor house there was the world famous wildlife artist Gary Hodges showing his work, luckily because we were later in the day most people had already been in and seen him so i waited until everyone had gone and then i went in for a chat. He was so encouraging and gave me loads of advice and looked at my work. talk about inspiration, i was buzzing, hes made a fortune drawing in pencil only so thats put my mind to rest as i was beginning to think that oils are where the money is but apparently not, he owns a mansion! i spent over an hour with him on my own with my parents, it was strange for me as everything he said was just like how i feel it felt like i had known him for years, we just clicked.  so there are no prizes for guessing what will be on my drawing board next!!

i think wildlife.... maybe a rhino or tiger maybe a lion, see what ref photos i can get sent me first, in fact i might even start it later as Stephen Fry is bogging me down a bit, and it might be better if i have 2 on the go so i can have a change and then have fresher eyes when i go back to it and not get bored of just working on the same project constantly. Plus i think wildlife would be easier to sell as there will be a bigger market for it, what are your thoughts??

Persevere with Stephen, Conty, he has a lovely  wistfull look ..next time you have to do a big sketch..is it possible to do it smalller and print it up larger? Nice that you met someone who helped you see what your future might hold...I'm sure there is a market for pencil sketches of animals..not quite where yuor Art college might see your future, but if you can earn eough and you like the work..why on earth not?

Conor, have you ever had a look at Shepherd's drawings of elephants and steam locomotives?  He loved both subjects and so often put them in pictures together. Some good stuff.

belle, its funny you should say that. yesterday i was feeling a bit moody with Stephen so i had a look at some art web sites. now ive looked at this one web site loads of times and he is brilliant at pencil work, after studying the drawings i noticed the original sizes!!! now i feel cheated, as i went to look at this guys work last year and its large beautiful pencil work but copies!! hes blowing everything up to sell as Ltd Editions!!! why have i not noticed that before?

im guessing as he is putting the measurements down in mm i think i was just assuming it was cm, my fault not his. so thats how they do it!! so im taking a leaf out of his book and see if it works for me doing the Rhino

Stephen will get done belle i wont give up on him, but i do feel happier having 2 peices on the go

Frank, i do take quite a few photographs as im interested in photography, but the drawing is my true passion but i do enjoy taking a good photo. I have a couple of photographs that a few people have commented on that they look like Windows screen savers, so last week i sent them to microsoft to see if they would like to buy the copy right on them. i have recieved an email saying thankyou for the beautiful photographs and they are sending them to the buying department, but they said they get hundreds sent to them all the time but wished me all the best of luck. and it might take a while to get a reply. not that im really expecting to hear any more but i thought id give it a try,

Thanks Stanley yep i do like a bit of David Shepherd, bit i cant imagine anyone not loving his work, one word for that guy 'genius'

We live an learn eh Conty? When i was your age I wanted to do work like the great masters, paintings like "The marraige of the Arnolfini." by Jan Van Eyk (not sure of spelling) blew me away with their detail...about 7 years ago David Hockney did a very interesting programme about how many of these early "masterpieces" were produced using lenses.. like a camera obscurer ...the subject was viewed through a lens in a portable dark room (bit like early photography) where it the lens reproduced the image onto a table...just needed the artist to trace the oulines and match the colours..like painintg by numbers...I felt so much better about my own inadequacies after that..what a shame I had to wait years to know it!

oh i know belle, last year i went to a meeting where alot of artists come together bring their work and just sit and draw together. i was the only one there that really drew anything myself, what they were doing was if they had a commission they where holding the photograph up to a window and then tracing the subject then just fill in with shading.

now im no expert, but i would feel robbed if i had paid for that commission, i feel its cheating. but i know alot of very well known artists do that or even have other artist paint for them. and its been the same for hundreds of years.

i can just imagine doing that a school, tracing just would not be exceptable, nor should it be, so when does it become exceptable?? that bit im confused about. but im not wasting time thinking about it too much, i dont do it and i never will. if someone asks me 'did you draw that?' i can hold my head up and say... yes

i just want to add, i have no problem what so ever with someone that would just like to paint, but have difficulty drawing what they want to paint, (novice not proffessional) tracing the subject. i cant see anything wrong with that at all, its all good practice with the paint brush
