I'm pleased to report that the booklet Explore The Barnoldswick Countryside is coming on nicely.
It's a 48pp A5 colour guide to the paths around Barlick - many of which I was unaware of (and I'm a born & bred Barlicker so it's likely that many offcomedens will find it interesting too).
The walks have been devised by the "Let's Walk & Talk" group which strides forth every Tuesday morning and hasn't missed a beat in over 5 years.
Book 1 consists of 10 walks with detailed maps and directions, together with great photography by Big Kev among others. There's plenty of material for Book 2 if this one is successful.
I'm always reluctant to go begging to the authorities for handouts, so instead of trying to get a grant using taxpayers' money we thought we'd try to see whether local businesses would advertise for a small fee, which would provide funds for printing by a local firm. I'm proper chuffed that almost every business we've approached has shown enthusiasm for the idea, which means we're likely to be able to keep the cover price down.
We're hoping to get it out for "Barnoldswick Day" in early October to catch the Christmas market.
All the routes will have been thoroughly tested for accuracy as far as possible and are based on existing public footpaths.
Here's a rough of the front cover:

It has nothing but ads for local businesses such as tradesmen, pubs, cafes and so on who pay to cover the printing. It is distributed to shops where it can be picked up by locals. We all use it and would be lost if it disappeared. So you should be able to make something of yours if it also offers walks!

What a great idea Heather. I reckon to know most of the walks around Barnoldswick, but can get confused sometimes, when signposts are missing etc, I will defo have one. All the very best with this more than worthwhile project..

Thanks Gus.
Talking of rocks, yesterday BK and I went to photograph the site of the former Rainhall Rocks viaduct from Ben Lane. We're going to put in a "Before & After" display.
I found a B/W postcard of RR on your Flikr site and used that as a reference. Would it be OK to use it in the booklet too? We'd credit you as the source. |

Dig out the CD of pics I gave you once, I have an idea Rainhall Rock is on there. If those aren't Edith's feet on the cover I'll stand locking up!

Cathy, Rainhall is a district name like 'Coates' and everything in it is named after it. The original was a Reign Hall in 1738 and probably from a Middle English by-name 'Rain' which became a surname. (EPNS) The Rainhall Rock is what used to be a limestone quarry, many of these are called 'Rock'. Skipton Rock, Thornton Rock, Gill rock, all limestone quarries.

1664 Dorothy Tempest The Raine

and
1542 A juror of the manorial court was John Tempest of The Raine
