The small conical emitters are being installed on the lamp posts in Skipton Road. No news from Mrs Trelliss. Only good thing is that Turkey foil is on sale in the Cathedral of Chice. Bit thicker than usual brand. Good for lining beanies to block the transmissions.

Rumour is that she had a lottery win and is in Bahamas with either Boris or Beamsley Bob. Certainly off the radar!

We will have to find a new person to assist us, maybe Cocky Cobbler from Skipton could do the lookout job, he is forever tramping round the hills.

I listened to a discussion on R4 over Xmas and marvelled at the fact that theologians are still arguing about the Magi. They had two major conclusions, we don't know who they are or where they came from and it was impossible for them to follow a star in the sky. So the jury is still out, we can believe in what we like!

Watching the advertisements I get a definite feeling that the emitters haven't been as efficient this year because there is a definite air of panic in the retail sector. Discounts of 70% being touted. It'll be interesting to see the retail sales figures for the holiday to see whether people did pull their horns in. One thing is certain, the climate isn't going to get any better on the New Year when the VAT goes up.

When will people learn, sale items are just items that the retailer couldn't sell for so called normal retail price (or for some reason no-one wanted them).  Are those sale items going to cost you more more or less, can you really remember how much those items were a month or two ago, will the retailer tell you?  And consumers panic thinking that this offer will never be repeated.  They are just clearing old stock that nobody else wanted.  Makes me very annoyed.  The bottom line is money, their money... oops your money...gone.

It makes me think of one of those Dr Who episodes when someone in power throws a switch and all the people start coming out of their front doors, down the front path, into the street and then marching to a central point (the supermarket in this case!). I think that when you have your credit card scanned in the supermarket they download data onto it which, when you handle the card, gets aborsbed through your skin and into the bloodstream then makes you buy specific products next time you visit. Some of the retailers even put a self-destruct mechanism in their receipts in the hope that you won't be able to check what you bought (if you don't believe me, try holding a receipt against a hot object such as a boiled kettle - but don't burn yourself!).

Consumption and advertising is such an enormous subject. I know that there are many people who use sales sensibly, they wait until what they want is offered and then take advantage of the lower price but I suspect many more just get sucked in by the hype. Theoretically, given rational decisions, sales shouldn't persuade anyone to buy somthing they don't need. Unfortunately many shoppers aren't rational. The persuasive properties of the credit card don't work quite as Tiz suggests but are just as effective.

Whatever happened to the lights this year, they must have passed us by and taken a different route.

It may be that Lights in the East has run its course Moh but it will still carry on I think as general commentary on advertising and consumption over Xmas and New Year. By the way, the double layer of foil worked! I resisted all their efforts to get me to spend more! I'm lucky enough to be able to say that despite a low income and buying far too many books I go into 2011 with a clean credit card, no debts and no excess food thrown away. I wish everyone the same result.

Done Moh. Conical emitters are up in Barlick as well but not switched on yet. Usual 'Festive' goods on sale in Cathedral of Choice with sell-by dates long before Xmas!

Am keeping a look out here in the east, will update accordingly. Some signs of pre-requisite activity here also. Festive arboreal item decorated in the Thetford east side cathedral already spotted.

Is it my imagination or has the whole shebang kicked off a bit later this year? Perhaps they are trying to counteract acquisition fatigue!

I took a photograph in our local Range shop, think it was mid September, of christmas card stuff to make. Earliest I have seen such stuff for sale but I suppose if you are making it yourself, you need to start early. Quitely expecting Easter Eggs to be on sale in a week or so....

Stanley, I notice these are foil chain links. Are they dual purpose, to be used as an emergency measure in case you run out of tinfoil?

Can't be too careful with the radiation from the emitters can you? No one wants to wake up with scrambled brains. Are the colours different strengths?
