Over the years I've not done so bad when it comes to working with computers, and most times I can eventually fix things up when it all goes pear-shaped.

Yesterday my Mac went not just pear-shaped but a complete fruit pudding with meringue and custard. Over the past few weeks it had been getting slower and slower until it said: "You know what? I can't be bothered anymore. I quit." And it did.

Fortunately there's a thing called Time Machine which regularly backs up the OS and all files to an external drive, so I wasn't too nonplussed.

Unfortunately my Mac refused even to start up. Missing its core thingies or something.

No probs - just re-install the OS from the original discs. Almost there - the discs were a bit out of date but I could easily update the version from the internet.

Went to restore all my settings, files, programmes, etc from Time Machine. Unfortunately my finely tuned and slimmed down original system had bloated by about 20GB when reinstalled - and my drive didn't have enough space on it to complete the job.

Grrr.

My backup drive (1TB  capacity) is also getting full so it looks like I'm going to have to buy another to dump my data into, then give it all a good clean out.

On top of that, once you start messing with reinstallations, I find much of my work software needs reactivating from the software companies - it's going to take me absolutely ages to get back to where I was a few, happy and organised days ago.

I hate computers.

Is anyone experiencing slow sending of Orange email? Logs on instantly at startup but long delay of Send. Been like that for three or four days.

Now that you mention it,........

I use my own system for receiving email but since Orange block port 25 I have to use their server for sending.I don't send much email, but a test this morning confirms its very slow.

From setting up numerous broadband/email accounts for customers, I'd say that email is being devalued.  They almost all use webmaill now and setting up a talktalk account a couple of days ago, it seems they've palmed off their email to AOL mail to do their dirty work.  After spending 15 minutes trying to get past AOL's near impossible Turing numbers I gave up and put an email account on my server for her.....

Orange has regained speed. Perhaps maintenance? Ubuntu 64bit updated the Adobe Flash player this morning. All these nice people working for me! There are still good people in the world.

We told you talent will out!

I had a cold call from some nice people telling me my computer was in danger if I didn't buy their software. Hee hee. They didn't even know what Ubuntu was! Great stuff, thanks Pluggy! (Expensive protective software for Windows of course....)

When Keith Lawson and his daughter visited the other day re Seven Stars Sharon noticed how fast the FMII booted up (smart lass!), I told Keith that we had a bloke in Barlick who could doctor his computers for him.... I showed her how fast it could do a mega-search, I think she was impressed!

I had mail from my grandson and he made an interesting comment about Windows, he said that had as it was, it soon told you if you had a virus. He reckoned that Macs were a lot more secure but in the unlikely event you got a virus it didn't give any warning. Made me wonder about Ubuntu, does the same apply or is young Harry wrong?

Because Windows almost certainly has Anti-Virus and the Mac & Linux boxes don't.  Providing Mac and Linux stay in single figure percentage market share, they aren't worth the attention of the bad guys. AV is available for both Mac and Linux, but nobody bothers with it because it slows the machine down and all it finds is harmless (to them) Windows stuff.....

Both Mac and Linux ask for an administrator password before they can save anything in the system areas.  Until Vista, Windows didn't even ask for confirmation before installing something. The argument goes you'd need to be pretty stupid to put type the password in because it pops up out of the blue asking for it.  Windows over does the confirmation thing, and it asks to confirm the most trivial of tasks, Users get into the habit of clicking OK so its protection is lost.

I make good money removing crap from 'fully protected' Windows boxes (XP,Vista and Seven), Long may it continue......

I manage my life on-line including several bank accounts, I have an unwritten rule that I never use a Windows box to do anything involving my money (I'm a tight b*gg*r). I don't have any form of protection on Ubuntu other than what it comes with as standard.
