Stanley, the Times font in OpenOffice doesn't offer an interrobang but if you click the Insert menu, then Special Characters, select font Deja Vu Serif and subset General Punctuation you will find it located as U+203D. I don't know how reliably it will survive printing etc if inserted in an OO document.

Anderes Richtingen...There are similar problems with Welsh-only road signs on the M5 in South Wales. We've fallen into the trap of looking for the Welsh town on the map when it simply meant `Keep Left' at the roundabout leaving the Services.

There is a difference between being competent and being a nice man!

What grabbed me this morning is the layest sit rep from the Gates Farm eviction. I forecast that this would run and run when it first popped up onj my horizon and my God was I right. The travellers have got the council in a corner. They have already spent more money than it would have taken to build a new site (as they are supposed to do under the law) but chose to spend the money on legal fees. It is all blowing back in their faces at the moment. There is almost certainty that the scale of evictions will have to be reduced and the possibillity that they will be abandoned altogether leaving some local political careers in flames.

I hold no brief for travellers in general, I have had my problems with them in the past but it's always heartening to see David felling Goliath!

"...but it's always heartening to see David felling Goliath!"

Not when Goliath is acting officially on behalf of the majority of law-abiding citizens who would never be allowed to get away with David's unlawful antics and blatant diisregard for planning regulations!

In a different part of the woods...have you read  about the travellers who have been keeping men as slaves? And this weekend we hear about the travellers who are trafficking slaves between a number of European countries including Britain, the Netherlands and Scandinavian nations.

We are still under attack, I have just spent 20 minutes deleting trolls. I try to sweep the litter up while you are all asleep!

Tiz, I agree about travellers but the council have handled this badly and broken the law themselves.

PS. Watched the Dispatches programme on Blair on C4 last night. Never did trust the bloke and nothing I saw last night changed my opinion.

Awful news for the BAe workers. BBC News says: "Defence contractor BAE Systems is to formally announce later that it is cutting nearly 3,000 jobs in the UK. Brough in East Yorkshire will see 900 jobs go, Warton in Lancashire will lose 822 posts and Samlesbury, also in Lancashire, will lose 565. A further 655 jobs will also be lost at smaller sites, taking the final figure to 2,942, the BBC understands." The Warton and Samlesbury cuts are especially bad, being so close together around the Preston area. Many of the skilled workers will have been paid well and their money spent locally was supporting lots of other businesses by the `trickle down' effect, as well as the businesses supporting BAe directly.

This DID attract my attention today ,and whilest it is of little significance  when it comes to issues like the above mentioned "job losses" (nice way of the describing failure to secure contracts ....for whatever reason )...was this .

A bloke on our local Freecyle Page  was asking for a Mountain Bike .......( "if anyone has one at the back of their garage , I'd give it a good home " ) , ......because he would " like to cycle The Camel Trail "......

Firstly ,"Freecycle" is in place to re-distribute items that would otherwise end up in landfill...... (and generally does pretty well)

Secondly , the Camel Trail is a cycle path and walkway using the bed of the old North Cornwall Railway line from Bodmin to Padstowe....and as such , is pretty  much FLAT !

"Wanted Mountain Bike".... Indeed........Aaaaagh !

Thanks Comrade! Just to let you know that while I was talking to a nice young man on planet Zog the line became active again. He was very open and told me it was not a local problem, one of the national servers was down, it was far bigger than we thought. I was tuched to see the comments and get a phone call from Caomrade Nolic to make sure I wasn't lying dead behind the door. Nice!

Now, bugger the web, I'm off for a walk.....

Irish Independant, 29/9/2011, Kevin Myers, reporter

" The BBC is advising its broadcasters to abandon the terms BC, and AD, these to be replaced with Before the Common Era, and Common Era, the reason, quote "As the BBC is committed to impartiality, it is appropriate that we do not use terms that do not offend or alienate non Christians"

Kevin goes on to ask where will it end, an abolition of goodbye?, a contraction of God Be With You<, he quotes a Catholic priest who was asked by two Muslims to remove a statue of Jesus and the Virgin Mary from his 150 yr old church because they found it "offensive"

One of the reasons we came to live in Ireland in 1968, was that our children were  being asked at school in Hyde Cheshire, to learn and say Muslim prayers, i am not religious personally, but i am happy with the Christian doctrine being taught to my family, but i have no desire to have foreign, un Christian religion enforced on my offsprings.

Whose bloody  country is it that you live in in the UK ?
