Anyone fancy helping to set up a new photography club in the Rainhal Centre? There are opportunities for FREE (for a limited period) use of part of the building.
This will be an ideal opportunity to exchange ideas, learn new skills and generally socialise with people who share your passion for photography.
Let me know...
Cheers

Kev, I'm hundreds of miles away - will you use a thread on this site as your web forum perhaps so that us outsiders can benefit too? I recently started a Camera and Photography advice thread on the OGFB Photography sub-forum, not because I can give advice but because I needed to ask for it.

Best of luck with it Kev. Only advice I would proffer is to spend more time looking at good pics than agonising about the technical bit. In the old days there were endless discussions about grain and I always remember Roger Perry showing me pics that were horribly grainy but great images. Best example was Cappa's D Day pics which were ruined by a technician who overcooked the negs in the dryer and melted them. About half a dozen were useable and they are now icons. Subject, composition and the defining moment are the keys in anything that's moving.

Is anyone aware of a photographic club who used to meet in the BBC (Barlick Baptist Centre)?

Hi Kev i think your idea of a photographic club is a great idea but, I think it would be out of my league, i am just a point and shoot man with my sony cybershot, any technical stuff would be beyond my ken, but i would be only too happy to help in any way i can... p.s. great way of getting new members by the way... cloning ...lol.

Gus - you take some great shots. Fancy camera equipment has nothing to do with it. I would like to think someone with only a mobile phone camera could join and gain something. Art and technique play a large part in photography, but there's so much more to this black art.
A badly composed shot taken with a £2000 camera could be beaten hands down with an imaginative or luckily candid shot from an £89 Curry's special offer camera.
I reckon a club would be a really nice social gathering too. And learning/sharing Photoshop tips and tricks would be great.
Have I managed to write this OK? Big Kev forced me to share the last bit of the decanter of Glenfiddich when he popped round earlier, and the effects have just kicked in. (Preparations for the move to dry land dictate that half a decanter of good whisky would be in danger of being spilled in transit...)

It would have been a shame to see it get spilt.
Gus, your pics are great, they tell a story and, technically, are what they should be. In focus and well exposed; what else could you ask for?
A photography club should do exactly what it says on the tin. A group of people meeting up to discuss their pictures, exchange ideas and tips but generally enjoy their hobby.
Apart from studying photography at school (it was science when I did it) and a year at night school most of my limited knowledge was learnt at a photography club. We set ourselves small projects and discussed the results over a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Point and shoot at the right thing and you're on to a winner. We're not looking for photographic experts just people who enjoy taking pictures.

Looks like the Glenfiiddich, oops sorry, the photography club has started already. I am all for it if it is as informal as it sounds, I was in the photography club when i was at school, and really enjoyed it, of course those were the days of dark rooms, fast film. enlargers and hypo etc. I learned a lot about photography in those days of black and white film and Gratispool, everything has changed since then of course.... except some of our finest scotch, that i most definately look forward to....

I'm only a beginner but I've been taking more interest recently and reading books about digital cameras. Also I found these tutorials useful on the Trusted Reviews web site. A couple of points that had a significant effect on me were (1) decide first what you want to do with the photo (i.e. print, view on screen, put on your web site, sell, publish etc) and (2) there isn't a right way and a wrong way, just make sure the photo is what *you* want. They sound obvious but I hadn't given them priority!

Tee Hee...Can I be in your club by correspondence? Slight problem getting there for meetings. Big Kev...I have the same camera...I think they are brilliant. (although the Kodak digital I had before that has now been passed on to my husband and it had different features, which I miss on the Cybershot. He is becoming interested in taking photos. When he concentrates, he takes brilliant pictures, but he tends to get a bit trigger happy and blurs about 60% of the shots he takes because he doesn't hold still enough. I am going to buy my first SLR within the next few months and am reading up as much as I can because I'm not sure what to buy. Then again, I'm told that 3D cameras will soon be widely available (would lerv one of those too...but will need to get the computer and TV to view them, so a bit of a pipe dream !) But in all truth, you don't need all the bells and whistles and light meters and the four foot long lens to take great pics.
get your people to phone my people and we will do lunch...MAZ |

I'm sure we can set up video conferencing....
I believe it's Gus who has the Cybershot, not me.
