Jack is making a lot of friends in Barlick. I don't know why, maybe it's his face markings but people on the street feel the need to stroke him. Women in particular fall for him.

As you know, I had a bad experience with Joe, the lurcher from Irlam. I was very wary about taking another feral dog on but I'm beginning to think that Jack will make it as a member of the team. He's good at coming to hand when off the lead but I'm not saying he'd take any notice if he was distracted.

He's fast and very agile and seems to have lungs as big as a bucket, I haven't heard him pant as though he's out of breath even after a hard run. As for jumping, he's like a cat. Here he is on his favourite perch. Someone asked me the other day why I don't stop him doing it. It's easier to clean the drainer twice a day!

[This topic started as Jack's blog but in Jan 2008 I had to put him down because he started attacking strange dogs.  His successor is Black Jack. a Patterdale pup, no point erasing Jack the Lurcher from history....  he was a good dog and what happened wasn't his fault.  He had too bad a start.....]

What do they hope to achieve by remaining anon.?

You have peace of mind Stanley knowing that you did the right thing.  You also have peace of mind knowing those people that matter to you also think you did the right thing.

You're right Mel on both counts and the reason why I posted was because it hurt again and I knew I'd get support.  Wonderful thing is OG......

When my pooch first came to live with me at 6 years old, I left her in the garden with her bed etc. in the shed and went out for 5 hours.  Despite a thunderstorm, she remained by the gate howling and crying.  It was then I realised that I had adopted a dog with some behavioural problems.

I got an anonymous letter (it wasn't difficult to work out who it was from) and to make myself feel better, I posted a letter to all my neighbours asking why they didn't have the guts to knock on my door and be a proper neighbour and speak to me about it.  It hurt like hell, but that little action did make me feel a whole lot better.

I didn't know what to do about her, but having accepted responsibility for her, I couldn't send her back and 5 years later, still haven't solved the anxiety she has when left alone (except when she is in the car).  I found someone in the next village who now looks after her for me when I am at work.  He is 80 soon, gets his 3 walks a day and she has brought companionship into his life, without the financial responsibility.  And I have made a dear friend.

So, in essence the anonymous letter writer did us all a big favour.  And therein lies my feeling of good conquering evil.

Chin up Stanley - you can hold your head high.  Jack is at Rainbow Bridge.

I hadn't looked in this thread for some time...and then when I do, it's like deja vu. Wierd, the poison pen letters again. Nowt so queer as folk. Some people just like sniping at public figures and I guess Stanley is a public figure with his head well over the parapet.

And Stanley had only just been writing again about rescuing the dog Jess from the moor ages ago. (Could the letter writer be the person who originally abandoned Jess on the moor, I wonder?)

People write poison pen letters because it gives them a feeling of power, and there is no danger of any comeback.
The person who wrote the letter obviously has a serious mental problem, but it is their problem not yours Stanley.

Quite Malcolm and I actually feel sorry for them but as I told the bobby, it's still disquieting and a despicable intrusion (apart from being cowardly) and if I ever get a better idea of the culprit I shan't hesitate to have them cautioned.  You're right about the profile in the town, not normally a problem.  In this case it was Jack's own profile, he had a far bigger fan club than me.

You're right Anni.  If there is a dog heaven Jack is there.  I wonder whether we do go anywhere when we die?  If we do the recording angel will have to wait a couple of minutes while all my canine mates get over their excitement at meeting me again.  It'll be a fair old pack!

I have to report a serious matter.....  Jack's ball went in the beck this morning and he went in after it.  The cold water disorientated him and whilst he grabbed the ball, he froze.  In the end I had to go for a paddle to recue him......  We didn't dawdle on the way home I'll tell you!  Both warm and dry now, long time since I was witchered!

Haven't heard that word - witchered- for a long time.  Hope the escapade has not put Jack off water.

I had this letter published this morning in the BET.

DANGEROUS DOGS

I was very sorry to see the story of the attack on Caroline Bairstow’s dog on the front page last week.  I sympathise with her but am afraid I have to disagree with her attitude in not wanting the attacking dog put down.

Many of you will have noted that I no longer go round with Big Jack the white lurcher and am now minded by Black Jack the Patterdale pup.  There is a reason for this.  Big Jack was abused dreadfully for the first 18 months of his life and taking him on was a bit of a project.  However, I persevered and in the end had almost four happy years with him.  He was attacked twice a couple of months ago and quite sensibly decided that in future he was going to get his retaliation in first.  He got to the stage where, if he was off the lead running (and to stop a Lurcher doing this is cruelty of the first order) and saw a strange dog he was likely to attack and I couldn’t stop him.  All I could see was a child in his jaws…..  even one of my six grandchildren.

I consulted with Mrs Marsh, Big Jack’s vet, and she agreed with me that he was a liability and we put him down.  Tears were shed but he had done no damage and as Mrs Marsh said, had the advantage of four happy years.  God looked after me and my friends took me to Nelson four days later and I became the proud owner of a Patterdale pup.  (Mrs Marsh likes Patterdales as well and says she wants Black Jack.  She can’t have him!)

Then came the incidents that prompt me to write this letter.  I received two poison pen letters accusing me of murder and this was very upsetting.  Evidently whoever wrote them had not thought the consequences through of owning a powerful dog that couldn’t be trusted.  It was bad enough having to put down an otherwise perfect dog without having to put up with anonymous nonsense and abuse like this.

My plea to dog-owners is that they should always bear in mind the thought of what would happen if their dog attacked.  Bad enough that it should be another dog but far worse if it was a child.  You cannot pass the responsibility on.  If you have a dog that has attacked without provocation you can never be sure it won’t happen again.  I for one couldn’t live with that responsibility.  Big Jack was a great friend, but he was a dog.  Balance this against damage to a child and ask yourself what is the sensible and safe course of action.

Because I don't know how to stop them.....  Someone will tell me eventually how to copy Word docs in......  I was told today that the attack was really serious, the dog got out of a car to attack, horrifying.  Imagine if it had been a child.
