Our lad dug up this bottle recently near Marsden Park, Nelson while doing some building work there. It has "Gordon's Special Dry London Gin" embossed on the front, and on the back is "Regd. 610617. There is an interesting image of a beast's head, "A584" and "UGBI" embossed on the bottom. It's 23cm tall and is made of a semi-opaque black/green glass, which is very thick. The reg number points to it being from the 1920s, if one collectors website is to be believed. It's probably worth less than a fiver, but that's not important - it would be nice just to put an accurate date to it. I'll attempt to upload photos:

Natterjack......  here are the destructions.

POSTING PICS
posting pics..... Make sure the pic is JPEG. Adjust size to 7" maximum dimension at 72dpi for colour and 9" max dimension for B&W. Save the adjusted pic in a folder dedicated to OG pics on your hard drive. Pick a time when the web is quiet and our server isn't under pressure, early in the morning, late at night or weekend. On Photos menu at top of page > Main Directory>submit pic. (long way round but most reliable way). Fill in the submit form and when you click on 'browse' to find your pic, go to your OGFB pics folder. Click on the pic you want to upload and then click submit on the form. If you've done everything right and you have a good connection to the server you will get a dialogue box that tells you your pic has been accepted. If you want to post that pic in a topic, highlight and copy the top URL by clicking on it and dragging cursor across it and right clicking for copy. Navigate back to the topic and in the edit box click on the 'submit image' icon, paste in the site URL and click submit. Your pic will appear in the edit box. Hit return until the cursor is below the pic and carry on. Keywords are just a way of helping the search engine to find the pics. I never bother but give a descriptive title as the search engine scans that as well. Once you have cracked it posting pics is easy. Time out error means the server is busy, wait 'til later or try again. Most common user error is wrong format or wrong size. It’s not a good idea to link pics in from another site, this can cause problems. Have the file physically present on your hard drive, that way you can be sure of access.

The regd no 610617 places this design as having first been registered in November 1912.

Thanks for the info, Mark.

I suspect that, as this is an old topic and the general consensus was that the bottle wasn't worth anything, our lad  would have put it into the glass recycling bin long since.

Ah well.Go to Top of Page

In the recycling. Strewth!...Eh up!...even. It'd fetch a packet down here in oz...well, draw interest, anyway. Anything not made of plastic tends to be labled historic, period, or heritage these days. Marsden Park. Hmm. Would I have seen certain types flying model aeroplanes there, once upon a time? Or was that a hillside I fondly remember as the Hardplats, or something similar? Good quality images, bye the way, Callunna. Difficult to photograph glass. Nice. Thanks for your kind thoughts on other post.

Thanks for the compliments on picture quality but in all honesty all I did was shoot them on a white background with the Auto setting on my ordinary 4mp camera.

E reckons the bottle is still intact (her son is as much of a hoarder as we are). Maybe it'll fetch a couple of bob on eBay? Worth a try.

Perhaps it would make a nice lampshade base for someone in Oz... Go to Top of Page

I THINK the registered number is the clue. As far as I know this is when the design was registered, not when the item was made. However, this number seems to indicate a date of about the first world war.

For starters, take a look at this website.

(Sorry, I should have read the thread a bit more carefully - my info is a bit behind the rimes !)

Don't worry Arfur, I make that mistake quite often too. It's a bigger risk on OGFB than on other forums because there's so much good information on the site!

Callunna, I live just a stone's throw from Marsden Park, if that's of any help to you.  A very interesting Archeological find. I'm sure Phil Harding from Time Team will be over there in a shot..... a shot you get it !!!! Ray.
Cheers

Alas, the bottle is long gone. Probably part of a milk bottle by now.

A shot ... yes ... very good :-)

Ribble Rouser, Marsden Park model aircraft quite possibly, Hardplatts possibly, Pendle Hill very possibly, and also over at Nick O' Pendle just above Sabden. Thursden Valley for kite flying.
