Recently the site has been targeted by numerous spammers and email harvesting robots, Some of you wil have received many of their emails offering long lost money, pledges and downright begging letters.
A lot of these were initially conducted by automatic email harvesting robots, who automatically registered as new members, thereby giving them access to the member listings. I stepped up the security on the registration page to overcome these robots, by requiring them to enter a return email address, before they could be accepted as a member. The robots are now history.
However, individuals from the Ivory coast, Samalia, Botswanna and other african countries are continuing to target the site and register as ligitimate members, again giving them access to the member list where they send individual Private messages using the sites software, luckily because this will be a manual process, only a few will recieve these messages.
I can step up the security another level (or 3), however the security process will reach a point where legitimate new members will be turned away because of the rigourous registration process, hence my reluctance to impliment the more secure method.
What I am asking is that you have patience with these troublesome annoying people and just delete their messages, if they do not get a response, then they will quickly ignore this site and move on.
In the last two months I have identified and banned more than 20 of these so-called members and will continue to do so, I am continually on the site throughout the day and patrol all new members and topics as they appear.
Don't give their messages the light of day, just delete them.
best regards

Watch out for this one. It claims to come from domain adobe-pdf-pro.net and the domains I have replaced with asterisks below were adobe-pdf.org. The adobe-pdf-pro.net web site looks professional but a `whois' lookup shows it is based in Moscow, Russia.

I feel quite neglected here. I have never had a single email of this type, or Nigerian financial opportunity letter. Well done to Fastmail.fm  .I think they are Australian. I pay a bit - for increased capacity, but got by with the free version for a long time.

We are susceptible because we run a small home business selling via a web site and so our email addresses get picked up from that and from our email promotion broadcasts.

Watch out for an email with "Here you have" in the title. Apparently the link spreads a nasty little trojan virus.

There will soon be a rash of fraudulent emails purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs asking you to reply so that they can arrange your repayment of overpaid tax. Ignore them all - HMRC never contacts people by email.

HMRC just bark orders by letter and ignore you if you attempt to contact them, or maybe I'm just cynical......

The "here you have" virus warning is one of the very few (2 to date I think)  that appears to be legit, all the others in my long experience have been hoaxes.  Something for the windows fraternity to worry about.  My domain email seems to good good job of removing the c**p, I get very little spam etc.

I don't use a filter because I like to find the legit emails that are spammed occasionally, all the others get zapped.

Be careful if you get a long email message titled `Steam rail, food and fun' and starting as follows:
'Murder and Mystery, with Steam and Style'
"Fridays: 16th September, 7th October, 11th November. Tuesday 6th, Wednesday 7th & Thursday 8th December 2011.
An evening of dining, mystery and suspense on the steam driven Golden Arrow Pullman with a luxurious overnight stay included.
Price all inclusive - £219 per person. ex. VAT and based on two people sharing"
The message appears to be spam, the links in the email have a domain name `wuilasinqua' which doesn't come up in a google search. I searched for the company name at the end of the message and found people saying that it's an outfit that keeps changing domain names to send out spam. Dodgy and best deleted! But it shows how they can make very innocent-looking messages.

Got that very email today sent to Theatrical Costumiers where I have some part time work at the moment. Quite an apt mailing for them but straight in the bin as it was unsolicited. Only ones I allow through are from potential customers that I then deal with accordingly.

Yes, they are getting more sophisticated - it was addressed to our business email address and at first it all looks normal. We read all our email in plain text and that's when I noticed the strange domain name. If I were using HTML I might not have known. I don't know what's in it for them but more than the usual run of the mill selling by the look of things. Could be just collecting data or something more malicious. Like you, we delete everything that doesn't fit our acceptability criteria, it's the only safe way these days.

Another email from the same lot, this time titled `making the deadline' and with the `from' set as `Plan Ahead'. Another new domain name that you can't find in google. If you go to the end of the message you see they give their company name as Communicado at a London address. I don't know if there is a genuine trustworthy business of this name but these emails appear with it and with variants such as Communicad0 and C0mmunicado. Very long detailed emails and it would be easy to mistake them as being OK.
