I'm aware that I keep hijacking poor old Big Malk's band topic, so I thought I'd better start a new one for ours.

But before I do, I'll just mention that BM's band are set to appear at Rolls in November. There! That's fair, int it?

The Border Patrol played at Allan Buck's inauguration dinner and all went well (no forgotten words/chords etc). We were due on at 3.30pm but the meal was delayed and speeches went on longer than anticipated so we didn't take to the stage till going up for 5pm. Unfortunately our sound engineers had another gig to go to so it was all a bit scary as to whether we'd have time, but big do's and little do's, it was OK in the end.

The guests also had a surprise whipround for Elaine's breast cancer fund, After The Storm, and it raised over £150. (She'll soon be able to hand over a large amout of cash to Airedale HODU and Bosom Friends - details to follow.)

I had my minidisc recorder switched on during the gig, but unfortunately the sound was too much for its little microphone and the distortion renders it unfit for public consumption.

Our band name actually fitted in well with some of the speeches which mentioned Barlick being on the Yorks/Lancs border, have your passport ready, etc. However, nothing is carved in stone and I've taken on board all the great suggestions by OG members.

Big Malk, the stage is much, much smaller than I remembered it. I think you might struggle with your rig unless you make sure they extend the stage area.

belle - really good bit of lateral thinking there. Cally - don't be so quick to give the product away. I think there's some life left in this CD yet. Remember your Yorkshire heritage. Bit of imaginative marketing called for?

Thank you everyone - you've all cheered me up a bit.

To be honest, Dave, the NowThen CD was OK at the time but I think I've moved on quite a bit musically since then and my dream is to re-record some of the songs but this time with professional musicians, in a studio with lots of time and money available.

The only thing holding me up is that I keep choosing the wrong lottery numbers each week...

Tinker, that's a nice idea. However I bet elfin safety would prevent a boat visit, and I'd probably have to get that clearance thing done with the police. But I'll certainly bear it in mind.

I've been thinking about my website - maybe if I had a separate page for each song so that loading was more efficient? The program I've been using (iWeb) is very basic but it has templates for blogs, photos and all sorts - so I might put a bit of thought and effort into creating a proper one, then just point people to it in my OGFB signature. That way I could incorporate my canal forum blogs too so that I'm only writing stuff once.

And Belle - even though I went to art college and got a degree, I would give anything to be able to paint and draw like I used to before I got 'trained'. It was all geared to getting a job in those days (which I suppose I should be thankful for).

Given that it's a very rare person who excels at everything, I don't think you need to wish you could do music as well as painting and drawing - from what I've seen of your material you have a real gift there.

I've just re-jigged the website - it seems to load faster now.

Call, I don't think health and safety would be an issue, but you could always take pics of the boat into the school, might be preferable to having "little darlings" wrecking you home! From my experience of working in schools, esp primary schools, all sorts of theatre groups and artists visit, but yes you would need a crb check.
It is interesting about what you say re Art, I always feel inferior because I haven't been to Art college, but as you say college often seems to take away the individuality of the work, i used to have a friend who ran an art gallery and he would look at photo's of work submitted by hopeful artists and name the establishment they had trained at...the pics were so easily identified...scary huh?

Just to let you know that we'll be appearing at The Event in the town square on Saturday.

Border Patrol (for that is us) is kicking off this music event at 1pm and as the afternoon progresses it will get rockier, culminating in a performance by Bashphelt.

The organisers have wrongly billed us as Now & Then - not only was there no ampersand in the name but the band split well over a year ago.

It would be great to have an appreciative audience (for a change!) so if you feel like a bit of a singalong to Bernulf, Wild West Craven and James & Mary Jane among other songs then please come along.Go to Top of Page

What time are you scheduled to kick off?  Weather looks dogy but only showers.

As mentioned in another thread, the BET were given a press release with the wrong band name despite my having told the organisers ages ago that we're The Border Patrol. Ah well.

And yes - we've been told to turn up for 1pm but who knows? When we did the Mayor's inauguration we were asked to be there for 1pm but by the time they'd finished eating it got to 4.30pm. Then they all went home. So we had to sing to a very sparse audience - very disheartening.

Hope the weather holds - there's no way I'm plugging in to an amp if it's raining. Go to Top of Page

Take your boat warmer with you, insulate before the performance, and you wouldn't feel a shock from a bit of rain.  Enjoy your performance, have a good day. I'll turn on the tely to catch the show (ha ha).

H, not the best forecast in the world for Sunday.  Later today we are forecast to have heavy rain and tomorrow the wind is going to get up and we could have a strong Easterly wind with heavy showers.  It will be cool, wrap up well.  After all it's summer!  I'd like to hear someone talking about the jet stream.  Like last year it seems to be running further south than we need for a good summer.  Even yesterday the wind was coming from slightly North of West and it was chilly.  Time we had some proper summer weather.....  Fingers crossed but it's definitely not going to be perfect weather.

H, not the best forecast in the world for Sunday.

It can do what it likes on Sunday - it's today that matters! The sky is very overcast as I write (8.30am) and the TV forecast last night showed the area completely swamped by a big blue splodge. Not good.

I shall take Herb's advice (purely for medicinal purposes) and hope that the forecasters got it wrong.

If you're planning to come along, bring an umbrella with you just in case! Go to Top of Page

Senior moment H.  I realised I had the day wrong when I walked through the Square at noon yesterday, just as the rain started.........  Hard luck with the weather.

I hope Gus doesn't mind, but here's a link to YouTube showing the video he took of our opening song, "Richard Riley" at The Event on Barnoldswick town square, 21/6/08.
