As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

Evidently a woman of quality, she agrees with us! Don't worry too much about the lack of a tutor, you're developing in your own way as you get more experience of life. That's why you are recognising and reproducing qualities that are beyond plain technique. You're getting insights and translating them to the image. That goes beyond techical skill and you are your own best guide. (Mind you, you could always take note of what we say!)

Get it all now Conty whilst you are young...once you are the same age as everyone else you will only be just another artist...so raise that profile whilst youth works in your favour!

I have a management theory called 'Wall of Death'. Basically what it means is that as long as you keep going like hell you won't drop off the wall. Belle is right, open the throttle and go for it while you have the enthusiasm and energy!

I finally finished watching the programme that was on last weekend about landscape art in Britain.  It was a good programme but what impressed me towards the end was the work of Atkinson Greenwood. I had always thought of him as a  Pre-Raphaelite painting etherial angels and classical women etc. His landscapes and townscapes though are just brilliant especially his ones at dusk.

Good news was that when I looked him up on t'interwebby I found he has a current exhibition in Harrogate. Quick trip over Blubberhouses for me in the next week or so.

Have a look at some of his work   http://www.johnatkinsongrimshaw.org/the-complete-works.html

Thanks for the info. I'd seen and admired the Liverpool paintings lots of times, but did not know the artist's name, or even that it was Liverpool.

Thanks for that Tinks.  Pately Bridge via Grassington  or Otley  way is the decision to be made and I think it will depend on the weather. Nolic

ive managed to miss that programme, but i havent had time to switch my tv on lately. :(

wish me luck today, im off for my interveiw at art school. i havent mentioned this before but ive also been put forward for a scholarship so although i am excited about going to art school i still might have to rethink things if i get offered a scholarship as everything will be paid for me, the trouble is i cant seem to find out if i will be able to study art there or if they will make me study sport, time will tell i guess but i dont want to waste anyones time if i cant study art,

have any of you done a scolarship?

Now take what I am about to say with a pinch of salt, don't let it make your mind up for you but just be a small part of the information you filter into your decision making process: when you go for your interview and they ask if you have any questions, try and ask enough about what sort of work you wil be expected to do..the reason i say this is I have known one or two good 'fine artists' like yourself who have gone to art College and been totally put off by the course because it focussed on "conceptual art" ..Tracey Emins unmade bed etc. i know one or two fine musicians who have gone off to study music and had to produce contempory work like John Cages "2 minutes 45seconds" (which for those not in the know is 2 mins 45 secs of silence).....no one can ever take away your artistic ability  Conty...whether you choose Art college or not but if you want to be a GREAT artist you will have to run at the front of where Art is now... and if you don't like where Art is now it might be tough.

Sounds sensible Belle. I'm not qualified to give any advice beyond the fact that Conor should be interviewing them to see if they are good enough to have him. One consolation Conor, whatever you choose, if it blows up in your face you can always do a runner. Its a school, not part of the Gulag!
