I've been thinking of starting this topic for a while.  Let's see how it goes....

Asked if he was in charge of the nation, in the absence of the Prime Minister -
Mr Clegg told Metro: ‘Yeah, I suppose I am. I forgot about that.

Nice one David and it encapsulates the basic flaw behind the bail-out. We lend them money, they pay our banks. Net result, Greece nil; Banking System 1.

Bet you never imagined yourself on the same side of the fence as John Redwood. I could see the smirk on his face this morning on R4.   He agrees that more loans don't solve a debt problem.  Says the only solution is for rich countries to give them the money, but they would then demand political control over the recipient.  Makes me think that national stereotypes are not too wrong after all.

David, behind all this is the hidden agenda of crisis management, the ability of external forces to modify the political and economic ethos of a country which, surprise surprise always makes them more accessible to the activities of global corporations. Fire sale of the infrastructure etc under the heading of forced privatisation etc. Read Naomi Klein's 'Shock Doctrine'. She lays out the history of these strategies since the 1930s. Essential reading! As far as the predators are concerned, every cloud has a silver lining!

I was once told by a senior civil servant close to the corridors of power in Wales to watch out for John Redwood, he was seen as a dangerous man when he was Welsh Secretary. I think this is why he has always been kept away from serious office since.

he has hit the ground strolling, and the voters are noticing. His occasional successes at PMQs disguise a growing problem. Fairly or not, he is settling in the public mind as that goofy guy who is mates with Gordon and who wants to keep taxes high. It may be a marathon to 2015, but Edward isn’t in the leaders’ pack. He’s stuck at the back with the guys dressed like dinosaurs.http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/benedictbrogan/100093694/what-if-the-shadow-cabinet-vote-turns-into-a-referendum-on-edward-miliband/

Tripps, Glastonbury Festival...we had the best position yesterday, facing east with a beautiful view of Glastonbury Tor and not a sound except for the willow warblers, reed buntings and bitterns. We were at the Ham Wall nature reserve which is on the *other* side of the Tor!

Lake Woebegone town motto. "Sumus quod Sumus".We are who we are.

What triggered that off is that it is on the tee shirt I put on this morning!

I heard a programme day before yesterday on alchoholism among Native Americans and heard one say "I am an alcoholic and I'm lost. The nation took our land and we've been lost ever since".

What struck me was that in my current book 'The History of the Indians in the United States' this is exactly what the chiefs and elders said time and time again about their treatment. Like the Aborigines in Australia, the colonists had completely missed the effect  of depriving the natives of their land. The colonists saw it as a financial asset, the natives saw it as an integral element of their existence, the bond with the land, their Mother. This was exactly what the Greek trade unionist said this morning on the World Service about the potential takeover of Greek assets by foreign capital. Ownership of the country is vital to them, not on such a fundamental level as the aborigine tribes but nonetheless important.
