Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

Callunna, get thee hence to Greenberfield and ask the lock keeper, if he does'nt know, then he's in the wrong job. Personally, I would think that a 14' 2" boat would fit most of the locks and bridges on the L & L.

I phoned BW. Sounds like we'd be able to get through the locks with a good half inch to spare either side.I think that helps me to make up my mind somewhat. Have you ever seen me trying to parallel park, for gawd's sake??? Not a pretty sight. And I can't even THINK straight, never mind steering a boat through a lock with just an inch to spare all round. So back to the 10' widebeam quest. There's one locally that we're looking at tomorrow. I won't drag poor old Thomo along just yet - it might not be suitable for us as regards layout. However, things do seem to be moving on apace. |

Less of the "old" lovely girl, and remember, layouts are there to be changed.

Ah, but it was a term of endearment, even though I've never met you =====================

H, don't worry about the 1/2 inch clearance. There will be a rubbing strake and it only means losing a bit of paint occasionally. Besides, you are never parallel, it would only be the occasional point contact. Don't let it put you off the boat.

I'm taking a huge deep breath and trying to stay calm ... but I think we've found THE boat!57' long, 10' wide, hull by V&G, 3 years old, Isuzu 55 2.2lt diesel engine, 1500 watt inverter, wind turbine, fully sprayfoamed, solid oak interior panelling and floorboards, steel is 10:6:5:5 (or maybe the last one was 4, not sure). And it's local, so no transportation costs. There's even a little workshop where I'll be able to have my office, separate from the living area. Still some paintwork to be finished, so it's not on the market yet which gives us a bit of time to do the necessaries (ie the small matter of selling the house...) If all goes to plan in that department, the boat is also just about in our price range. So Thomo - I may be calling upon your expertise sooner than I anticipated, to give it the onceover and point out all the terrible things that must be wrong with it but which we can't see because of our rose-tinted specs. Well done E&H! Lie down in a dark room for a while, take some deep breaths and make a list....... Good time of year for selling houses....... You could get a surprise with the amount you get.

Thanks, S. However, no time to lie down - must get the lawn cut while the rain holds off, plus clean & tidy the house ready for agents valuations on Monday. Luckily the place is in fairly good nick so no remedial work or decorating necessaryI have photos of the wonderboat but in fairness to the present owner I won't post them on a public website until it's 100% certain that we're having it. It already has a name, but we'll be able to change it to suit ourselves if/when we re-register it. First thoughts are "Bernulf" of Barnoldswick. Dare I ask for other suggestions, knowing what you lot are like? Oh go on then |

Cally, if you did not know this you'll hate me. Its bad luck to change the name of a boat. Look what happened when they changed the name of The Victoria as they had just finished building it! Nolic

Good luck Cally. Hope this all goes well for you.
Having achieved a dream I know all to well how rosy those specs can be. Just keep them free of finger marks and you'll be okay.

Hi Callunna, sounds like we are getting somewhere at last. Spec sounds ok, possible 10, 6, 5, 4. Where is it? (send pm) for sneak preview. On name changing, call it what you like, nautical superstition is just that. The liner SS France became SS Norway and even if it is on a beach in India, it still looks like what it is. One of the most common problems with name change is naming your boat after your partner, the boat remains unchanged, but your partner may be off with someone who has a better boat. In my capacity as signwriter, I have written all sorts of names on boats and one that still gets people guessing is "OMAHD" One man and his dog., this chaps earlier boat was "WOL" workshy old layabout! See you soon I hope, Thomo. And your right, I am old.
