Brad, I have an idea that the first engineer on the Roberts' engine was the fitter from Roberts who installed it. He liked the engine so much he decided to stay with it!

Tha's a touching story Stanley and has a true ring to it ....
My memory is filled with Polished steel (lightly oiled) and mid grey paintwork , with the mother of pearl  "Badge "on the front of one of the cylinders....and all those lovely domed nuts .
Something else that just comes to mind , is that the workshop under the office was the first place I ever saw  a blacksmith's forge ..Tommy explained how the bellows worked and showed me how the metal changed when you beat it and plunged it into water (or was it oil ?) ....I seem to remember him joining bits of metal too.

There were two "Tommys" working with the engine ...One "Big" and the other "Small"....they reminded me of Laurel and Hardy , and were my best friends , in the school holidays...

I'll never forget Big Tommy's face when I showed him my FROG 80 model plane engine ....It sat in the palm of his hand like a walnut ..
He made up a sort of flywheel and got it running on the bench for me , though...

He died before 1960 (not long ) so thankfully he never saw HIS (and it was) engine de-comissioned...I wouldn't think he could have been the fitter from Roberts , unless he was very young at the time ....but you never know , eh !

Brad, Newton told me the story about the fitter.

Belle, certainly not! Funny thing is I didn't see it yesterday when I posted for Brad. I was given an umbrella once and gave it away straight away! You can poke fun at me any time you like. After all, people have been doing it all my life and it's never harmed me. (Or changed the way I behave!)

I'm quessing Mr Pickles knew quite a bit about  the Engine  at Hendon Mills ....I would have loved to hear more  !...
I'm really sad that I have no photos of her in any of he Family albums ....There aren't many of the Mill at all , which I find quire surprising...Ah Well !

Now I've found out how to scan and post (onto a  thread ,at least) I will have a see what I can find .

Brad, have look at Newton tapes AG/04 to 06. Can't tell you exactly where the reference is. Geoff Shackleton covers the mill in his book 'The Textile Mills of Nelson'. Mentiona Hartley and Bradley Nelson. Ask your library to get a copy on inter library loan. (Or call in and see me!) If you mailed Christine at Colne Library she may know of other material.

Main thing that is grabbing me is the wonderful November weather we are having. I think back to my days picking farm milk up and the cold horozontal November rain we usually suffered. A miserable month but this year is heaven!

"You can poke fun at me any time you like. After all, people have been doing it all my life and it's never harmed me. (Or changed the way I behave!)"   Stanley

That goes for me too, Stanley. In staff meetings at work, when the boss would ask me to stand up and give my talk, one of my work colleagues always said "He is standing up!".

The warm weather is creating problems here too. One of our veg gardening friends has new raspberries forming on his bushes. Roses are still in flower. Moss and grass is growing like mad.

I wasn't intending to poke fun at anyone..just saw the carton and it had Stanley's name on and I figured he would agree with the sentiments! I was a bit sad it has been interpreted in this way!

Belle, as the youngsters say to me, "Chill out!" There's nothing to be sad about! (Email messages and forum posts are notorious for getting misinerpolated, misinterpretated, misinterpreted.)
