Can anyone help with the Snowden family who farmed 300 acres at Wigglesworth Hall in 1861?? My great great grandad was a shepherd there before he went off to Ripley, nr Knaresborough to marry Hannah DUCKETT who was a servant at Ripley in 1866. I'd love to know how they met. Were they an important family?? I wondered if Hannah was a servant at Ripley Castle but need to go to the WYAS.Did the Snowden family have 'connections'??
I do love a puzzle!! Any help greatly received.

The branch of the Snowden Family that springs to mind is that which included Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the Exchequer in the first Labour government (1924). He was known as the 'Iron Chancellor' because of his rigorous handling of the economy. He was born in Cowling and his father was a handloom weaver. In the 1960s/70s this family farmed at Cowling and the son had a farm at Shaftsbury. I know this because I carted stirks and grown cattle for them when I worked for Richard Drinkall. There is an obelisk on Ickornshaw Moor called the Snowden Memorial. There will be some biog on Philip Snowden somewhere and this could have some clues in it for you. (Biography published in 1934)

The only entry I have for Wigglesworth in the index is as follows:
Early Yorkshire Charters; p 178ff.
1201-1220. Gift by Ralph son of William de Scotton to Robert the Clerk, rector of Long Preston of all his right in the village of Wigglesworth, namely the Lordship of the whole villsaving the right of his land. Elias de Amundeville. 1215 to 1230. The Lordship of the vill passes to Fountains Abbey.

In the 1861 census a man called Turner Snowden, age 64 was the Toll House keeper at the Toll Bar at Foulridge.

The only other Snowdens I have in the index are the Cowling branch.

I looked in the 1881 census and it threw up these which may be of interest:
