Took dad out for surprise lunch last Wednesday to the Fanny Grey. He chose gammon, and I opted for finny haddock atop cheesy mash.

Wow, what wonderful portions! I didn't think dad would manage his; every time he worked his way through one piece, yet more gammon materialised, and very tasty he said it was too! he asked for both pineapple AND egg, the request met with a smile and "of course." Vegetables were served in a separate dish, and dad said they were good too, as were the plentiful chips (home made). Judging by the empty plate, he thoroughly enjoyed it.

My haddock was equally delicious - and again, plenty of it; very tender big chunks (as opposed to flakes), and not too salty, as can often happen with this fish, and just the right amount of cheese so as not to drown out the flavour of the fish.

Neither of us could manage a sweet, and thank goodness we didn't opt for starters!

Besides the menu, there was a large "specials" board, with choices ranging from traditional English fayre to more "exotic" choices.

It's the first time I've been there for almost 30 years, and I thoroughly recommend it - and what a view!

Agree with Tortiecat, lovely meal. I had tomato soup for starters, which was really tasty. Then for main course had seabass and prawns with delicious homemade chips. Hubby had a choritzo starter which I sampled ,it was good. Then he had gamepie and mash seved with loads of vegetables. The  puddings looked  varied on the board, but we were so full by then we had to resist them. Good restaurant food, we shall go again .

Hi,  I've read, with interest, all the chat about the Fanny Grey, Salterforth. I'm particularly interested as my 3xgt grandfather, Wilkinson Parkinson was, according to baptism records 1816 and 1818, Innkeeper at Salterforth Lane Head. I understand, from the present landlord, that the pub has had 3 names - before the Fanny Grey it was the Bowling Green and prior to that the Lane Head.
If anyone has any info on the pub around this period I would be delighted to hear from them.

Regards
Pat in Cumbria

I wish them well. Pub-keeping is high risk activity these days! Same for Cross Keys as well, I hope they succeed. I keep asking, is the Railway closed or just sadly neglected?

The Railway is up for sale and being run by a temporary manager as far as I am aware. I suppose Pubmaster or whoever will not want to spend on the upkeep, bit like flogging a dead horse.

Ian this is out of context , but you just reminded me of a fellow trader , during the time when I had a stall on a Saturday at Leak  Market .....

When trade was "slow" he would walk out from behind his pitch and shout /roar   "Come  on ... Roll up  boy and girls ...Get your Dead  'orses  'ere...that's what we're a floggin'  of...Dead 'orses " ..... (and if it was raining , it was often followed by a baleful look skywards, and ..."THANKYOU GOD  !"  )

Lovely man with a huge sense of humour.....sadly dead now , but I'm told he wasn't struck by lightening ....ever.

Ian. thanks for that. They complain about the Commercial being boarded up and I agree it looks terrible but the Railway looks even worse to me. They could at least tidy the windows up, remove all the dirty posters and get a window cleaner in!

Remember when all the pubs in Gisburn were open and Church street had four pubs in less that 100 yards?
