Jack is making a lot of friends in Barlick. I don't know why, maybe it's his face markings but people on the street feel the need to stroke him. Women in particular fall for him.
As you know, I had a bad experience with Joe, the lurcher from Irlam. I was very wary about taking another feral dog on but I'm beginning to think that Jack will make it as a member of the team. He's good at coming to hand when off the lead but I'm not saying he'd take any notice if he was distracted.
He's fast and very agile and seems to have lungs as big as a bucket, I haven't heard him pant as though he's out of breath even after a hard run. As for jumping, he's like a cat. Here he is on his favourite perch. Someone asked me the other day why I don't stop him doing it. It's easier to clean the drainer twice a day!
[This topic started as Jack's blog but in Jan 2008 I had to put him down because he started attacking strange dogs. His successor is Black Jack. a Patterdale pup, no point erasing Jack the Lurcher from history.... he was a good dog and what happened wasn't his fault. He had too bad a start.....]

This is so sad Stanley and I feel for you. What a brave decision you made, it must have been so hard, but nevertheless the right decision for both Jack and yourself. And you have the comfort in knowing you gave him four good and loving years and that must have gone such a long way to restore some of his faith in human nature.
I am glad Geoff & I had opportunity to meet Jack at the Christmas 'Do' - he was lovely, behaved like a true gentleman and came over to say hello to us. You told us of his early abuse, but we had no idea of his resultant problems, which shows how much he must have benefitted from all the love you gave him.
Take care
Gill

Oh Stanley what can I say that hasn't been said. I really feel for you and have shed a few tears - but as you say it was for the best. He will be missed by all his 'fans' in Barlick.

Comrade, I'm very sorry to learn about Jack and the bad time you must be going through. It might be some consolation to know that if I'd never met Jack we would not have got a lurcher. He was a grand dog but the way he was turning you did the right thing. Nolic

Stanley, I'm very sorry to hear the news, but you made the right decision. My father, who had grown up with dogs, was attacked one day on his way to work by a dog that had "turned". It destroyed his trust in dogs and after that he was (and at 89 still is) worried by dogs.
Good luck with your search for a new canine friend - I look forward to seeing the outcome!

So sorry Stanley, but you made the right decision and any responsible owner would have had to do the same. Concentrate on those four years of quality life you were able to give him.

I'm going all emotional again...... damn it! How's this for coincidence; I was talking to Janet (daughter in Perth WA), she had rung to commiserate with me today and she told me that she was out walking a pup on Sunday, a young Ridgeback(!!!!!) she was looking after for the day when she was attacked by four Japanese Bulldogs that had escaped from a yard where a young woman was 'looking after them' while the owners were away. She said they circled her like a pack and if the younf woman's boyfriend hadn't turned up with his mates she would have been in serious trouble. The dogs were illagal and everything has been reported to the authorities..... Nightmare scenario. You are all right, I did the right thing and have no guilt, only regret and a certain sense of failure.

Once again, I'm touched and heartened by all the messages. Would you believe that Margaret has asked Doc to check I am OK....... OG is definitely a community......

Sorry to hear the news Stanley, I think all of us who love animals feel saddened in some way when such a thing happens. I'm sure however, that two new puppies will put a new found spring in your step . . . so just watch where you step!
Best wishes

I am also saddened to hear the news Stanley. It is never easy to part company with an animal that you have loved. As a number of friends on here have already said, you gave Jack over 4 years of contented life. Your decision was not an easy one but I feel sure that it was the best one. Looking to double up on the excercise machines are you, Jack must have done a good job.
