I think you have voiced what many of us thought Amanda, welcome to the site, i hope you can find more positive posts to take your interest.
Call, Sandy, I think Amy winehouses death is tragic, such a talent, but no self worth..twenty seven is no age at all, I feel for every family out there who has had to lose someone in this soul destryoing way.

David, good link and yes, she was treated disgracefully. If the coalitioin give her freedom to act I'll be impressed and grateful.
Amanda, welcome to the site, I made a similar comment, the police are too quick to give details in press conferences. Even though she's been charged the case of the nurse at Stepping Hill worried me as well. Name and picture on TV before she was charged.
Tiz, I did the same sum when I realised how small the population was. One theory is that he was heavily influenced by the formation of the English Defence League or whatever they call themselves.
It's always sad when someone young goes into auto-destruct mode. Big problem for those close to them is that there is often very little that can be done. Amy Winehouse was a case in point and we can all think of other examples. Parents should never have to bury their kids.

I've just been reminded of another 'fact' I heard last night about the Norwegian killings. It was reported that he had used dum-dum bullets. The name comes from a town in Bengal where in the early 1890s, Captain Bertie Clay developed a bullet with the copper jacket cut away at the tip to reveal its soft lead core which meant it expanded when it hit the body and caused terrible injuries. We were using it against the native population of course! There are many modern variants including one which shatters into splinters when it hits the target. The Geneva convention barred them for military use I think but they are still used by some foreign police forces and the most common variant is the hollow point lead bullet which has the same effect. Big Game hunters used to use them on large animals because they had greater 'stopping power'. I have an idea they are used by the 'air marshalls' using low powder loads to get round the danger of puncturing the pressure cell of the cabin if they have to fire.

I watched the news from Norway and the thing that struck me about the public reaction was that it was more quiet and dignified than it would have been here. The death toll has gone down slightly, there was some double-counting of bodies in the confusion. Well done the judge who threw freedom of speech out of the window due to the particular circumstances and denie the culprit the oxygen of publicity. He is remanded in solitary confinement for eight weeks with no access to media, visits, writing material or any contact with the outside world. Very sensible.

Something strange going on...last night the BBC news said HM Revenue & Customs had failed to send out letters to hundreds of thousands of the millions of those who pay tax by self-assessment (e.g. small businesses) in time for the payment deadline. The story is still on the Telegraph web site here (LINK) but it's nowhere to be found on the BBC web site and it's not covered elsewhere except in a few derivative news sites which probably got it from the Telegraph. The story says HMRC failed to order enough paper for all the letters. I believe the Revenue rejected this claim but hasn't denied that many of the letters failed to go out. We are one of those who haven't received their expected letter. I wonder what's going on?

I think most people who deal with HMRC on a regular basis (like the self employed) will be well aware the're a bunch of clueless muppets. I certainly am, if they were a business they'd have gone to the wall years ago.

I received a letter from HMRC on Monday telling me I would be receiving a letter in the next few weeks about self assessment !! Nolic

We spoke to our accountant about it and he sorted us out but he said a number of his clients are having Revenue problems that are preventing them from correctly filing and meeting deadlines. HMRC are treating everything exactly by the book, no initiative used, so it takes ages to sort out what should be a simple problem.
Perhaps someone can help with a very different problem. My in-laws had a fright when the cooker grill caught fire. Father-in-law manged to grab the grill pan, take it outside and smother the fire (not bad for someone who has Parkinsons' and difficulty walking) but their cooker is now messy with burnt fat. He went to shops to try and buy a caustic oven cleaner product but couldn't find any and now wonders if they were banned as being too dangerous. Anyone know of a good product for getting burnt and charred fat off a cooker?

Just saw tv news footage of a lady in England who veered off the road while driving, due to misty weather, and ended up down a cliff just stopping before the drop. A local jogger noticed her car and stayed with her until help came. It took 6hrs to bring her and the car back up to the road. Goodness how lucky was she!!

Tiz, try this LINK for a do it yourself ecological solution. There are plenty of foam oven cleaners out there but they are very aggressive. If you breathe the spray it will catch your throat. This way will be slow but not dangerous. Tell your dad that Stanley says a charred grill never killed anyone!
Cathy, she was trapped for almost 24 hours evidently. Very lucky escape.
The Shipwrecked Bears prog is on R4 this morning at 11am.

Re the HMRC and tax problem...the news finallly appeared on the BBC web site 2 hours after I posted it on OGFB! (LINK).
"Self-assessment: Paper problems caused tax delay"
"The UK tax authority has failed to order enough special paper, causing a delay in statements about unpaid tax. Some people who file self-assessment tax returns receive a statement that outlines any tax due, with one payment deadline on 31 July.
