We've just had a few days down in Skipton, and had a good time and a good sail back.
Well almost a good sail, we got talking about the state of the canal through Barlick. Y'know its getting a little drab, especially the section from the RR factory to Ouzledale. Its strewn with rubbish, shallow and sometimes its the haunt of a few menacing teenagers. Two were hanging off the bridge this afternoon and were being egged on to "kick her in the 'ead" The head in question was my wifes, she was stood on the bow of the boat. The egging mouthy little lass had her phone ready to take a photo if one of the lads had a go....he didnt, lucky chap.
I wont mention the condition of Greenberfield locks since BW sold off the cottage.
We always tell other boaters how beautiful the canal is from Barrowford locks to Skipton. We may start have to start telling them to be careful sailing through Barlick though.
And thats a shame....
Andy.

It is a shame.. It always seems to fall on the interested or indeed the injured parties to try and rectify these situations, but surely, dare I say it, it is a local issue in the broader sense of the word. .Sucha a good amenity could bring money into the area. Never mind the leisure, the history as well must be fascinating

Andy, sorry to here such a negative report from a reliable source. You're right about the problems and one wonders how things can get any better after PH reign of incompetence at DEFRA. As for yobs on bridges, there is a theory that it's all down to Omega 3 deficiency. Hand out the cod liver oil pills I say! (or police them.....)

I passed Andy's comments on to one of our town councilors. He has forwarded them to British Waterways and the local constabulary. I'll keep you posted....

So sorry to hear this, after we'd had such a great afternoon with you.
Like others have said, it's very unusual for Barlick. We were speaking to the local bobby, Sean, about another matter so we mentioned this to him.
I have a feeling it will be nipped in the bud pretty smartish. |

There is a problem on the canal through Stoke. Kids have been setting a 'trip-wire' so that cyclists or pedestrians fall foul. They are usually sitting on nearby steps waiting for it to happen. There were no youth clubs, places to go or things to do when I was teenager (often the excuse made for and by these layabouts) and yet no one I knew did anything remotely like this.

The problem with the youths was not a major problem, we've had similar incidents in towns all over the canal network. More bravado than intent I think.
However I stand by my thoughts on the state of the cut, it is a bit of a mess.

This may be of some interest although it does not solve the problem. For a good few years now all of the towns that have had CCTV installed in the centres have had problems with antisocial activities removing themselves elsewhere. Blackburn was the first reported instance, and there the target was the canal area. Leeds was another. In other areas where the canal is central to the main communal facilities it has long been a problem. The root cause is not the fault of the Government or any other official body, its down to Mum and Dad. In indigenous British society kids are optional, not obligatory. If you must have them, then control them properly.

Ian Evans reckoned that the solution was a Vickers MG mounted on the bow.......

Perhaps canal tow paths should have a toll restricting access, with free passes for those who lived on the canal, and special rates for walking groups etc.

Belle, I'm not sure if thats the way forward or not, personally I prefer canals to be for all users all the time. Its just that bit of canal I mentioned, its grotty and sadly its in Barlick.....either side of it and you are back in glorious countryside.
We also met two boats that had had windows broken on their way up here, one was attacked in Blackburn, near Asda the other somewhere around Burnley. Yobs can congregate near a canal in any town and cause problems.

When I was working with Peter at LPM we had a thriving trade making sheet metal covers for windows of boats left on moorings.

Surely that is depriving the majority Belle? Maybe a warden or CCTV would work?
