Phew! That's what they call a labour of love! Must have taken ages to key that lot in. Peel himself wasn't a blood relative of my carer, but the connection's there by marriage - I guess his descendents would be her cousins, several times removed

Wonderful. I seem to remember an earlier version of this. It's a marvellous tool for anyone researching the name. Thanks for posting it Richard.

No, no links to Broughtons at all, I keep hoping in all your relatives one might pop up married to one of mine, wishful thinking I'm afraid.

I am not trying to trace my married name. My single name was Kippax and I have got back as far as 1769 proven, before that into the 1600's but not proven. My family originate from the Briercliffe area, although on one line they come from Chorley, but that was along way back. The Briercliffe lot include Parker (who go way back) , Stanworth (who go nearly as far back), Brierley, Nutter, others from in and around Lancashire/Cheshire are Glover. Lockett, Marsden, Yates to name a few. Not related to any Peters so that lets your ex wife out.

I don't think so. Belle Broughton never married. I'm not sure she is still alive, here are a few things I wrote at the time.
I have a file dated 2001
Miss Belle Broughton lived at the family home in Denton Street. Now living at Peel Nursing Home, Colne. Looked after by Day care officer Felicity Cooper.
I wrote to her
Letter dated January 21, 2001
I think this was when she had celebrated her 100th birthday, and I saw it in the local newspaper
Dear Belle,
I was interested to see you in the local paper recently. I was brought up at Bracewell but was reading the local paper over the internet as I now live in Australia. It has been a remarkable achievement to live into a third century and I was pleased to see in the article that you are still enjoying yourself and meeting up with friends.
As you can see, I am a Broughton, son of Ted Broughton who now lives at Carleton. He was born in 1921,brought up in Earby and his father John Broughton, born in Barnoldswick in 1880, lived most of his life in Earby. As I’ve looked back in my family history using parish records and the censuses taken in the last century, I have begun to realize that I am from a branch of the Broughton family which has lived in or around Barnoldswick for 6 or 7 generations. In my studies I have learnt a lot about my relations from the last century. I have read some of the books by Dorothy Carthy and Mary Lancaster who I believe have talked to you about life in the old days in Barnoldswick.
I was interested in your family, to see if we are distant relatives – you would think we would have to be. Who were your mother and father and do you know who your grandparents were on your father’s side? If you can tell me this, I may be able to piece together the jigsaw and work out if we are relatives. I also see that you lived in the old family house in Denton St. My GtGrandfather, William born 1844, my GtGtGrandfather Dewhurst born in 1808, and my GtGtGtGrandfather John born about 1769 were all stonemasons, living in Barnoldswick. I seem to remember from one of Dorothy Carthy’s books that Denton St was built by one of the Broughton’s. Do you remember which one?
I’m very pleased to have made contact with you. I wish you all the best for the future and I hope you or one of your friends will be able to write back to me. Best Wishes
Nigel Broughton
Later in 2001, I wrote to her again. She must have told me that her father was Alpha.
In the 1891 census of Barnoldswick, Alpha Broughton was 29, living in Garden Street and described as a shoemaker. Hia wife was Ellen who was born in Ingleton and they had two children Emma 3, and Winnie 1.
In 1881, Alpha was 19, unmarried and living at the Orchard in Barnoldswick. Head of the household was Jane Broughton who was a widow and aged 51. She was born at Flasby, York, England and her occupation was a Boot & Shoes Dealer
Alpha was her son and a cotton weaver. Also living there were her other sons and daughters, Margaret who was18 and a milliner, John Richard who was 15 and a joiner’s apprentice, Emma Jane 13 and described as an assistant at home, and Isabella who was 12 and described as a scholar. They had all been born in Barnoldswick.
In 1871 living at Orchard Cottages were the following people Elias Broughton who was head of the household, 36 and a Stone Mason born in Barnoldswick, Jane his wife, 39 and described as Stone Mason’s wife. She was born at Flasby. Their eldest son was Alpha who was 10 and was born in Barnoldswick, other children were Margaret Ann, 8, a scholar, John Richard 7, a scholar, Emma 3, scholar and Isabella 2 . They had all been born in Barnoldswick.
In 1861 living at Orchard Cottages were Elias Broughton, head, married 24 and a stone Mason, born in Barnoldswick and his wife Jane 27, a dressmaker.
In 1851 living at Gep Hill were the following. Richard Broughton Head 47, Grocer born at Barnoldswick, Jennet his wife 46 and born at Barnoldswick and also Thomas their son, 20 and a stone Mason , Margaret their daughter 21, Emmanuel ,18 stone mason, Isaac 16 stone mason, Elias 14, a stone mason, Joshua 12, John 11, Alice 10,
Isabella 7. All these children were born in Barnoldswick.
The census for 1841 is sparse on details but living in Barnoldswick, at the same household were the following
Richard BROUGHTON - 35y - Grocer - born Yorks
Jennett BROUGHTON - 35y - born Yorks
Mary Ann BROUGHTON - 15y - Cotton Weaver - born Yorks
Margaret BROUGHTON - 13y - Cotton Weaver - born Yorks
Thomas BROUGHTON - 11y - Cotton Weaver - born Yorks
Emanuel - (male) BROUGHTON - 9y - born Yorks
Isaac BROUGHTON - 7y - born Yorks
Elias BROUGHTON - 5y - born Yorks
Joshua BROUGHTON - 3y - born Yorks
John BROUGHTON - 2y - born Yorks
If we now go to the parish records, Richard Broughton married Jennett Slater on 31st May, 1824. Richard was probably born in 1803, and baptised Sept 25th, son of Stephen Broughton, a mason of Lane Ends and Mary, his wife. Stephen and Mary Thorp had 5 children baptised, Mary in 1799, William, 1801, Richard 1803, Margaret 1808 and Mary 1811.
Stephen was probably born in 1774, the 5th child of Richard Broughton a stone mason of Barnoldswick. His mother was Ann, and the other children were Richard, 1767, John, 1769, William 1771 ann 1773. John was the father of Dewhurst Broughton from whom both myself and Dorothy Carthy are descended.
So, at last I we have the link, Belle. We share the same GtGtGtGtGtGrandparents Richard Broughton and his wife Ann. You seem to have come down the retail descendants with Ricahard being a grocer and my line stayed with stone masonry for a few more generations.
Let me know if any of this rings a bell.
I hear you will be celebrating another birthday soon, Best Wishes and pass on my best to Annie Shorrocks and Dorothy Carthy.
Nigel Broughton
Does anyone know what happened to Belle?

Nigel, no obviously a different Belle and my aunt would have been somewhat younger. Thank for the info anyway.
I noticed you were brought up in Bracewell, what relation are you to John Broughton who was at Ermysted's from 1962 to '69 ? Nolic
