I've always been fascinated by the things people do in their spare time when they can do exactly what they want to do. Men and sheds are a particularly fertile field. Women tend to do their thing in the comfort of the house.

I was delighted to see Andy's picture of the clock movement he has made.

It struck me that we could perhaps start a new topic devoted to spare time skill. So Andy starts it off and my contribution is this:

It's a small steam engine made from scratch and is based on the Stuart 5A but a longer stroke. One of these will drive a 14 foot boat with steam at 250psi. By the way, we don't like to call them models, it's exactly the same construction and materials as a full size engine, just smaller. So come on out there, let's hear about what you make in your spare time. I reckon we could be in for some surprises!

Looking good Kev here are my 2 suggestions for what to put on the wall

Item 1

Item 2

I'm not in to pics of myself on the wall (it tends to frighten small children and put people off their dinner) so item 2 is out. Item 1 looks just the job. Cheers

I am amazed that nobody has taken me to task for the typo above.  I apologise, I meant screw the chuck off....  not the chick!  Too good to edit though.....  I need help.  I have made the tray for the 1937 Pickles lathe but need a lift to get it under the lathe.......  All offers gratefully accepted.  It's too big a lump for me to do it on my own.

Hi Tom

Many thanks for the compliments Tom. I thought of the stainless rack as well but, as you rightly say, height is a factor. I do have a stainless rack with a lot of pans hanging on it (you can just see it in the top left of the picture) the advertising board is top of my list but my style consultant thinks an old clock would look good, I'm not going to argue with her, yet.....

Kev ,our wall has a stainless clock with something under it to hang utensils,ie garlic crusher tin opener and funny looking big spoons,I'd definately try and sweet talk the good lady into the advertising board.

By the time I read through this topic to see what you were all on about, the two items on ebay had finished and what came up on the links were pictures of smocked dresses and skirts(I kid you not!) so I was very confused!

Re what should be on the wall, maybe it's stating the obvious but as it's above the cooker, wouldn't and exttractor hood be the  most pratical thing, i know it might spoil the aesthetics but anything else you put there, if you do any amount of cooking at all , is just going to get the continual updraft of cooking steam!

Kev, why not invest in one of Tinkers paintings. One of terraced houses would look nice on that back wall. Nolic

BK, in support of your argument against a clock....would the steam, heat and grease that is in the air in a kitchen make a clock stop working quite quickly

I thought the cooker looked like it's sunk into the wall with a hood built in behind the bit where the clock/picture will go?

It is indeed set back in the original fireplace with an extractor fitted up the chimney (you cannot believe the mess when I opened it up). I'm not 100% sure what I want on the wall. A picture would be a good idea, or perhaps a clock and a picture.......

Cancel the cry for strong men, I saw a bloke in the street with his hands in his pockets so I dragged him in and got him on the team.....  I have to sort the pic out and show you what I've been doing today......

I've made a tray for the lathe and it's sitting in its permanent position now.  To make it a bit lighter I took the overhead gear off and while it was in bits I polished the shafting in the lathe and cleaned everything up.  The tray is just sat on the sideboard located by some blocks underneath so no screw holes in the daughters' legacy.  I did this pic at lunchtime and this afternoon I fitted the motor so theoretically I could start turning on it but I shall postpone that pleasure until tomorrow.  I know it's a bit eccentric to have a working lathe in the front room for an ornament but it's the best way to make sure it is kept in proper working order.

Big problem......  I started the lathe up today and apart from some adjustments in the drive and the bearings growling a bit in the motor, all is well.  However, and a big however, I put a chuck on and it's out of truth.  Either someone has had a jam up or more likely the nose has had a heavy blow, probably the lathe has been dropped, and the mandrel is bent.  I shall have a proper furtle tomorrow but I might have to make a new mandrel for it.....  It'll have to be the most accurate bit of turning I have ever done.....
