According to this weeks BET, there is a proposal by Maple Grove Developments (Preston) to create a Supermarket and Car Parking for 275 cars on the current Carlson Filtration site at Butts. Apparently, plans are already underway to create a new food store and car park. The plans are at an early stage and rest on obtaining planning permission and a successful re-location of the Carlson Filtration operations.
You can read the article in the Barnoldswick and Earby Times (BET) and comment on the article here:

The development company is holding an exhibition of the proposed plans on Wednesday 30th Jan 2008 at the Rainhall Centre from 2.30pm to 7.30pm.
Good or bad idea, discuss..

I had a brief look at the BET this morning, there is a short article in there. I think the meeting is in the Rainhall Centre but would check first.

I think we should add that the meeting is on Tuesday 3rd June at 7pm and is open to the general public. Anyone wishing to speak at the meeting needs to contact Joanne Eccles in Committee Services at Nelson Town Hall, Tel (01282 661654), Fax (01282 661630), email: joanne.eccles@pendle.gov.uk no later than 12 noon on the day of the meeting.

What struck me was the number of comments, almost all hegative, they have received. I wonder how this compares to other applications? Fairly high I should think. One word of caution, if the vote goes against the planners don't relax, that's when they make a second strike through the back door of the appeal system.

I think the traffic implications and the potential of creating "rat runs" through residential areas will carry a lot of weight. If the Highways Department have a downer on it, it will resist appeal. The sundry proposed developments at Coates Wharfe have been held at bay now for quite a number of years on the traffic safety and access implications of the site. There is a huge difference between the traffic generated for a retail development and that for residential. If the site is to be redeveloped in some way, that is the only sensible and safe option that I can see.

I agree but there is also the flood risk and the problem of that back wall revetting the hill side. If I had property at the end of Taylor street I'd be all over them like a big tent!

Interesting. One amendment and one withdrawal. Keep your eyes skinned for another application. They are playing games, unless of course, Carlsons have had a rethink.... Not the best time ever for major financial changes to a company's structure. The nice thing is that many people will be relieved and perhaps sleep easier. Barnoldswick will not go into melt-down because of this decision and neither will Carlsons. That, after all, could be the proof of the pudding.

Reported in Craven Herald today that Carlson Filtration have just completed a £750,000 investment into modifying the mill complex at Butts.
One thing I have noticed though, housing now being built on Coates Wharfe. This was always turned down on traffic concerns. It will be interesting to see how they handle access when the houses are finally finished, work seems to be a bit start stop at the moment, plant is on site but nothing much seems to be happening.

Ian, I've noted the Protec vans etc outside and got the same impression.
The housing on Coates Wharf was held up for a long while because of planning matters that arose during the build. Par for the course I suppose. There used to be a building right on the edge of the road, owned by the Calf Hall Shed Co at one point for some reason. Two adjoining cottages and they were demolished when the new bridge was put in, late 1950s?
