"Block the 'ole and pump six loads of ready-mix in from the top...."

That reminds me of a bloke in this village who was renovating his bathroom in an old house. He broke up the floor to lay a new one and found a human skeleton. Knowing all the trouble there would be if he reported it, he ordered a load of ready-mix...

I noticed the "...and the former Mullards plant at Witton Business Park". I haven't been back to Blackburn for a long time but Mullards (my dad worked there) was on the opposite side of the town from Witton Park. Has the Witton area moved or has the site of the former plant moved?

Also, the statement: "When I was a child there were about 200 chimneys belching out smoke, and it was a sign of prosperity." Prosperity - for some folk yes, for others like me a sign of bronchitis!

I always wonder how I managed to survive Stockport with healthy lungs. The smog was always there, so bad that the Luftwaffe never got a clear sight of the big railway viaduct they were trying to bomb. I can remember clearly standing in the dark under a street lamp in the 1950s outside the Grammar School waiting for the tram home and I couldn't see the lamp, only a dim glow. Those were the days!

I can remember coming out of the picture house's (movies, cinemas for any youngsters reading this!) in Blackburn and being hardly able to see - no matter whether it was night or day! It was difficult to even find your way from the Royal to the hot potato man on Railway Road in winter.

My mother once got lost during the war going to the corner shop 100 yards away. It took her almost an hour to get oriented and find her way back. Add the black-out to a fog and you had serious trouble.

You were lucky .....We used to dream about Smog...........

Most mornings we had to swim to work .....in the dark too !....

Joking apart , I do remember standing in Market Street ,in Manchester, in the late 50's when it suddenly went  "dark"  (very)  at about 2.30 p.m...........Not Funny !

I still have a couple of 'Well's No. 18 Unbreakable' Oil Flares. A solid cast iron pot with a spout that has a cotton wick threaded through it. You filled them with old oil and paraffin and lit the wick. They gave an orange flickering light with was very visible in fog. When things got really bad the tram conductor used to walk in front of the tram carrying the flare. They were used round road works as well.

They built them good in those days. If you ran over this you'd know about it!
