I've only just caught up with this topic, but I find it quite interesting. I took a look at LuLu last night and it is quite an interesting concept. Nothing ready for the printing stage yet, but I have been secretly dabbling for a while now. I suffer from Tommy's problem though....hate sitting still and typing.

My cover girl Bee is delighted and bought all four volumes of me memoirs yesterday! Grand daughter Laura has glandular fever and is reading Vol IV and complaining because it isn't dedicated to her.....  You can't win!

Sorry about the delay, i've finaly finished the end covers of my book, it was thanks to Peters click by click guide that made it possible, so i think i'me about ready to up load everything, just make one last check.

I uploaded the skript, when i checked it the page numbers had jumped to the wrong pages, re-edited the whole thing and the same thing happend again, so i deleted the file and will try again, any ideas?

Colin, If you are using Msoft Word the bad news is that it is lousy at numbering pages and has a life of its own. I have noticed that if you do an index, when you insert it it starts its own numbering section on the wrong page. I have now learned to ignore the numbering apart from making sure that chapters start on odd numbered pages. I don't have any section breaks, the numbering starts at 1 on the first fly leaf of the book and goes on from there. My advice is that as long as the odd pages are numbered correctly in the main body of the book and when you insrt the index it relates to the right pages ignore the numbering.  I have seen me spend hours trying to get it to work and have never succeeded., it's a fact of life so accept it and reflect that it actually makes no difference to the content.

Thanks Stanley, yes i am using Msoft word. Not sure if  i understood you right. Do i delete the page numbers? If there's no page numbers, how can the index relate to the appropriate page? Some new chapters start on even numbered pages, how do i get around that? I do appreciate your advice and you will definitely be mentioned in the acknowledgements.

Done it. I re edited and found a way of keeping the page numbers, uploaded and checked everything, all ok. Now the end covers, can't find out how to use the old cover design, tried a few things but didn't work, but working on it.

Hello Colin, I'm glad to hear you are making progress. I don't think Stanley means you to delete page numbers - by `ignore the numbering' I guess he means don't be fussy about it. For instance, don't try and follow the numbering convention where the first page of each chapter doesn't display a page number.

When you come to the end of a chapter don't just use the Enter key repeatedly to push the start of the next chapter onto a new page. Instead, hold down the Control (Ctrl) key while you press the Enter key once. This creates a page break instead of a paragraph break.

If a chapter *ends* on an even-numbered (left) page this will put your new chapter on the next (odd) page. If the chapter *ends* on an odd-numbered (right) page do the Ctrl-Enter twice and you will end up  with a blank (left) page and then your new chapter on the right page.

Well done Colin and you'll learn more about doing it by doing it than being told how to go about doing it. Got that? Clear enough? Now all we need to know is the title and your full author name so we can go and buy a copy.

Peter, one word about the forced page break. I find that the process is a lot more flexible if you just use the enter key because it makes it easier to do minor formatting adjustments after inserting new text or pics. I use pics to fill blank pages and get my chapter pages in line on odd numbers. Chacun a son gout......

Hello my dear friends. I'm sorry I have been absent but I had a really bad health scare with my son. All seems ok, but I hit a brickwall and have not been able to cope with things properly. I have made a vow to get back to my typing tasks next week and I usually keep my word! It was a pity really because I was going great guns and only had a few days left before I was finished. Not to worry, soon be done and on its way to Stanley for a once over and slight adjustment. I have to congratulate Colin because while I was away he finished his book. As they say down south Colin  "well done my son". Hope to be joining you very soon!  While I was going through pictures on the site I came across a Larkin photo of the the church of the good shepherd in Stamford Hill, Hackney. This was my family church and my children were christened there. So that was a nice surprise. This church was a source of scandal in days gone by. The vicar (I think his name was Piggott) was a notorius womaniser and the locals chased him onto nearby Clapton Common with the intention of stretching his neck. Let that be a warning to all you errant steeplejacks! Best wishes to you all and I hope this little letter finds you all happy and loved by those who love you. Tommy.

Nice to see you back Tommy. Send the file when you're ready but do the title pages as well so you don't have to do anything to it when you get it back which will upset the formatting. Then when it comes back from me it will be ready for uploading.

Stanley I think I've finished!! I'll do some proofing over the weekend and then get it winging your way. Boy have I knuckled down these last few days. I'm glad I haven't got little ones to care for or they would never have had their breakfast! Anyway, we are in the finishing stretch now and with your guidance 'Get in the shelter' will become a reality. Best regards to you and all those who visit your wonderful website. Tommy.
