Herb, there was an article about the Wikileaks chap, Assange, in The Times on the weekend by a woman who worked with him. He sounds a bit strange with strong mood swings and combined with a lot of charisma that allows him to influence gullible types. What surprised me about this whole business was that the US security people didn't crash his web sites immediately. They monitor the Internet all the time and would have known as soon as the first leaks appeared. Oh, OK, that was the second thing that surprised me. I guess the first was that US security was so lax - after all their criticism of the UK for being leaky in the past!

Yes we do Frank, evidence HERE

No Moh, does it matter?

News just in that the high Court have thrown out the government appeal against the ruling that those overpaid benefit because of errors in the system (Income tax credits I think)  do not have to pay the money back if there was no fraud or misrepresentation. Will this be a precedent? Could it apply to PAYE debts? Interesting.

I know it is the pantomine season but Stanley, that report could have been written by a child. That is not evidence it is rubbish with people just searching for a Story.   If what is said was true the H&SE would have charged both the Operator and Contrctor. I have looked albeit briefly through back issues of the P & J and can't find anything on it !!!!

Have a listen to this then. LINK HERE

So in your opnion a report by Transocean, a response by HSE, the evidence of an expert and a House of Commons Committee are all pantomime characters? I suppose you'll be right then as usual....

time for a little levity:  a Toronto DJ was reading off some classified ads from a UK newspaper:

For sale wedding dress, worn once...by mistake!

For sale, 2 cows, never bred, and 1 gay bull!

I agree with the list you have provided they are Pantomime Characters.
An expert Commons Committee I am still ROFL at that one !!!!!!!!

I do know that the link you provided to the Birmingham Newspaper was just utter tosh, written by someone who knew nothing about the subject at all.

Did the HSE issue an Improvement Notice ?? The expert was not a Driling Expert. or a Mud Engineer,   he was just voicing an opinion. Try to stay away from posting tittle tattle when you have no concrete facts what so ever, you end up with egg on your face.
By the way I love your Anti American bias.

Bradders, Ask Doc, it was he who named me.

Frank, what's this anti-American rhetoric? So you didn't listen to the BBC clip, that's the safest way, ignore the evidence, rubbish the informer and go off at a tangent.

Ted, there was a bloke on talking about PFI this morning and whilst I didn't understand him clearly he appeared to be saying that due to the time the contracts were written we are locked ino excessive rates of interest for 30+ years. Surely it can't be worse than we thought.

Blair and Straw recalled to Iraq enquiry. Theory is that during investigations in France new evidence has come to light about the French and the second UN resolution. Also new evidence that suggets that not only was Lord Goldsmith's evidence that to invade Iraq was illegal was rubbished and a new one asked for but the FO lawyers were unanimous that it was illegal and they were totally ignored.

Heard someone describing people who walk round with mobile phones to their ears as 'meanderthals'. I like that!

Wouldn't it be nice if we could go back to free education as a universal right. How long before funding is removed from sixth forms and the rest of the system. (Don't say it couldn't happen, anything is possible under the present market-led ethos)

What strikes me is that the section hardest hit will be the mature students looking for a new start in life. When I did that in the late 1970s I didn't have to pay and got a discretionary grant from the county for my dependents (after a hell of a fight!) Ask any responsible university and they will tell you that a leavening of mature people in the student body was a good thing. The late Charles Carter at Lancaster University was a great advocate for this and it was due to him supporting David Moore at Nelson and Colne College that 'Open College' was started at Nelson and proved a good way back into the system for hundreds of us oldies. All gone now...

We are losing a valuable concept here which, if a proper cost/benefit analysis was done would prove to be a great investment in the future of the UK. Unfortunately, this is not the criteria being used by the ConDem government, slash funding for tutors 80% and make the students pay. My mate Steve who taught me has just retired and it's worth listening to the opinions of men like him who have devoted their lives to nurturing talent. They are heart-broken.

Do you think that the Cleaner or the Care Worker should fund university education through taxation, so that say a Dr can earn around £100000 a year.

Or should they not pay for that expensive education themselves when they start to earn above £25000 a year ?
Bet the Uni drop out rate falls when this is introduced.

It is Quality we need from our Univerities not Quantity, that seems to have been the failing of the last Goverment.
In my opinion you are looking at the Politics of this issue not the Policy.
My cousin funded his further education at MIT by working for 3 years then going to the States to further his knowledge,  I forgot to add his earning potential as well.

Stanley, is this the real you coming out, "who cares"? If I kept calling you Frank and my reply when you politely mentioned it was "who cares"? I think you would come to the conclusion I didn't hold you or Frank in any high regard!

"Wouldn't it be nice if we could go back to free education as a universal right." - Stanley

Education at school level should be free because it is essential for the individual and the nation. Education at degree level should be free for those who will be entering strategically essential occupations that require university style training rather than on-the-job training - but only for courses at good quality universities. Examples of subjects that should not be free: drama & dance, media studies, tourism, nursing, sports science. There are far too many people graduating then going into jobs weher they don't need or don't use their university education. I agree with Frank that we need more quality and less quantity - except that I would say "desperately need".

Stanley, I always suspected that the PFI agreements would charge top rate on interest due. You and I, and, I.m sure, many others could see what a millstone we were taking on and, whilst the politicians, and their so called advisors must be held primarily responsible, surely it was incumbent on the civil servants who would negotiate the finer points to make sure that we were not taking burdens like that on. Or did they and were overruled? Regretably nowadays, or at least up to a few months ago, the people who are paid to know better didn't seem bothered about debt.
