Could we have a bird waching forum please? Imindoors has had an SLR for his 40th and is snapping away more than ever. I'd love to show you some of the results. The pictures include deer, birds, frogs, bugs. Maybe general wildlife would be better?

The SLR is the camera he is snapping away with...sorry for the confusion. Blame the wine!! (Oilcan, I know you were just trying to be funny really) Maybe Cath could add some pics of you to the new wildlife section

Good idea, Mel.We have a wide variety of garden birds that visit us, including a woodpecker very occasionally, and of course the usual sparrows, finches, blackbirds, songthrushes, great, blue & coal tits, wrens and robins. We put out seeds, nuts and fatballs over winter and the little beggers devour everything voraciously. I bet we have very happy worms and snails - I'm worried we're creating the bird equivalent of McDonalds and they're not bothering with wholesome food now! However, the most fascinating thing happened the other day. Suddenly there was an enormous amount of feathers flying and we thought next door's cat had finally got lucky and actually caught something. However, it turned out to be a sparrowhawk which had dived on to a pigeon and had pinned it down until it finally killed it and flew off with it in its claws. I've never seen that happen before - especially not in a back garden. Of course, my camera was nowhere near at the time! |

We have buzzards here, they do that frequently. I know it's nature but it makes me cringe. We have a pic of a woodpecker as well as willow warbles & marsh tits. (never heard of them till we looked at pics in a book!). Also a couple of thermalling buzzards.

Sitting up at Letcliffe we occasionally see buzzards coming in from further up the dale.

Our previous garden was a haven for birds until the hawk appeared - it was quite upsetting to hear the small birds cry if it got them - plus the awful sight feathers etc from a collared dove - I know its nature but not nice on your door step. Here we have the usual garden birds but get quite a lot flying over - yesterday we had 6 swans flying over shouting to each other.

Looking forward to the pictures. I feed a small bird some of my apple each lunch time, the other day I had been sat for too long without throwing him a piece, after looking at me for a minute or so, he gave a little cry then jumped up and down on the spot to let me know what he was waiting for.

One of the things that fascinated me about visiting Oz was the fact that the birds were completely different. Even the bird song in the morning. The Kookaburras seemed to start every morning off with a good argument!

First of the pictures imindoors took duing this latest trip
We believe this to be a Nuthatch.
Maybe I need a new photo section for France as the only category I could use was 'other'? Or even just a general wildlife/birds category?

We think this one is a Willow Warbler although I'm not convinced. The stripe over the eye doesn't quite match the pictures I'm looking at on the RSPB site. We have a European bird book in France and it compared better to the image it shows. (Could be a wren on second thoughts)
