A nice snapshot of Barrowford life there, not much to add - viii. HENRY NUTTER, b. Abt. June 03, 1866 - in 1891 this Henry was a butcher in the shop at 106 Gisburn Road now occupied by Beech's Butchers, these propertied were built by the Stansfield brothers and were known as Bowling Green - this shows a long continuity of this shop being a butchers .

2. JOHN NUTTER married MARY BARROWCLOUGH Bartholomew, Colne, daughter of HENRY BARROWCLOUGH and ELIZABETH SKINNER. JOHN was a Shoemaker. 1851 lived at Doctor’s Row, Barrowford - John also lived at Barrowclough Buildings, now the Conservative Club, then owned by his distinguished father-in-law.

In response to a separate query - Nutter Buildings is difficult to locate, it would be a row of houses (on the main road?) and built, or owned/partly owned, by Nutters at a specific period. 10 years either side of this period the houses could be known by another name. It would be easier to locate if shown in context with other addresses from the census.

Victoria Buildings are given in the 51 census as being next to Ingham Street - this is the row of shops on Gisburn Road fronting Butterfield Street. Victoria House was next to this row, built by the Berry's of Berry's Mill and occupied by a daughter of the family. Now demolished, the site of this property is a car park below Rushton St. School.

Doctor's Row was demolished in the 19th c and replaced by the offices for Albert MIlls, these became the Council Offices at the bottom of Halstead Lane.

Thanks so much! I'll be breaking out my map of Barrowford and will try to pinpoint these sites and will have a walk around when I'm over next. Is Halstead Lane the one that goes straight UP and requires a 94-point turn to get back down? (Not that I know that from experience...ahem....but keep in mind I'm an American driver)

Deb, in order to preserve public safety on the roads might I offer my services as a pedestrian guide? - The next time you are over just park in nearby Nelson, walk down into Barrowford and knock on my door, I'll show you the relevant buildings on foot - ---- price? One pint (of Glenmorangie) in the George & Dragon.

Halstead Lane is a virtual cul-de-sac - Pasture Lane runs up by the side of the White Bear pub and Halstead Lane is the next turning on the Higherford side - running parallel with Pasture Lane. Doctors Row was between Pasture Lane and Halstead Lane - formerly School Street.

On reflection I think that Nutter Buildings/Row was on Church Street, (formerly Bank Style),this brings in Mel's mob. Now - if you have the heart to withstand this, Mel might be related - before you proceed please sit down and have a serious think on where this could lead

Mark, on ancestry there seem to be at least three Richard Nutters born in or around Barrowford/Brierfield/Nelson in the years 1847 1848 and 1850. I am struggling to know for certain which one of these is my Richard Nutter. Is it coincidence or bad recording that has got produced this cluster of near dates Richards? As to the Ezra i don't know if any of them had that as a middle name, but I have seen it. My Richard, whose birthdate i have as 1848, but this is not confirmed by a certificate, is some relation to Job Nutter, possibly his brother, as both Job and Ezra are biblical names it does seem to be a Nutter theme...if  you can shed any light on my Nutters i would be most grateful, thik I have just muddied the water's where Richard Ezra is concenred...sorry!

Thanks for your comments Belle.   I am relatively new to this game, but from what I have seen so far, the waters are often muddied just before they clear!

I have been relatively lucky so far in my search.  Richard Nutter born Barrowford 1805 moved to Stockport where he married and had children.  There are significantly fewer Nutters in Stockport than in Lancashire as you can imagine.   I have managed to trace the vast majority of Nutters born  in Stockport from 1835 - 1915 back to Richard.  I have an ongoing project to try and trace all of the Nutter descendents of Richard, which is slowly grinding to a halt after the 1911 census, but if anyone is interested drop me a line (I have about 80 Nutters plotted so far).   Indeed if anyone has any connection to Nutters in the Stockport area, or Leeds / Witton / Northwich please let me know.

Back to Richard Ezra, my Richard Ezra was born in Stockport (mistranscribed as Stockton on Ancestry, which highlights issues with record keeping....).   Unfortunately I haven't spend much time looking at the Barrowford area from 1847 - 1850 so I can't help you much more on that at the moment.   Sorry!

Sometimes if you find a few of the same name within a short length of time they maybe from the same parents and the early ones have died. It may be worth looking for deaths around the same time.

Hello,

Found you all with google. Lots of very useful information on this forum for me, thank you everyone.

My family tree includes Alfred Nutter b1887, son of John Nutter b1847, and Rosa Hartley who I believe to be the son of John Nutter b 9 Apr 1816 in Briercliffe & Ann Halstead. I think he is the son of John Nutter b1791 & Sarah Spencer.

Is anyone able to relate this John Nutter to any earlier Nutters?

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Peter James Nutter and I am also linked to the Richard Nutter born 1805. Which in turn links me to Mark although we have never met. By chance I was his missing link to Stockport. I was born and bred there and my father Thomas Nutter born 1944 was the son of Albert Nutter born 1912 who  in turn is the son of Albert Nutter born 1873 who is the son of John Nutter born 1837 all of whom are born in Stockport.

On my recent searches I am noticing a theme of Betty being married to William nutter b1775 approx. However I am noticing on other peoples trees that there is a Matilda born by a Betty (nee Manley) from both 1803 and another in 1829. Basically I am sturggling to make a link from Richard b1805 to his supposed father of William/Betty is there anybody out there who can provide difinitive proof? Is a little hard for me as I live in the Algarve in Portugal. Gets a bit expensive popping across to look at records lol....

Nice to meet you all and hope to speak again soon.

Pete

Deborah, my ancestors were Mathew Manley and Sarah Anne Manley of Colne and, later Nelson. They might have been related to Elizabeth Manley who married William Nutter 24th Jan 1793. Have you come across the names Mathew and Sarah Anne Manley. Ray.

For the William Nutter in question I have been given the parental names of Robert Nutter c1739 and Anne Hargreavs (More likely to be Hargreaves) b1740.

Again any information to confirm this would be greatly apprrciated.
