The Web n Walk USB modem connected to my Apple Mac notebook is pretty good, but sometimes OGFB takes ages to load pages so I wanted to check that I was getting the speed promised by T-Mobile.
I went on several speed checking websites and I'm pleased to say that on average (I did 5 tests per website) I am indeed achieving the 3.6 meg which I should do through the 3G network.
The website below was quite fun to use (I haven't even tried to make it a clicky, just copy & paste into your browser)
http://www.speedtest.net
and I notice that webmasters can quickly set up a facility on their own websites using some code supplied by these people.
I was wondering whether anyone might find that a useful little addition to OGFB and if so, whether Doc or Ringo could facilitate it?

Wireless on my work network I'm on 54.0 mps. at the moment. If I use my docking station it goes up to 100mps - totally meaningless as I get just as good...or bad a response time on my own PC of 6.00 to 6.5 mps through Tiscali.

Freeserve (or whatever they call it now) gives 3.5 and whilst it would be nice to have it faster I suppose I'm quite happy. When I log on it tells me the speed and when I've checked it with a speed test it's roughly right for downloads but of course uploading is slower for some reason......

uploading is slower for some reason...... it's the way high speed broadband connections are designed, asymetrically. The majority of users download most of the time so manufacturers build their kit to suit them.......

I wasn't really asking what speeds other people achieve, although of course it's interesting to compare. I think an average of 3.6 is pretty good for a mobile USB modem, although I was getting 5 when I had a fixed landline.
My point was that nobody gets maximum stated speed ALL the time because it depends on what traffic is going through your ISP's system when you happen to be using it. When I did the tests I got a different speed each time, from snail's pace to lightning fast.
So I thought it would be handy to have a quick facility on OGFB, on the same lines as being able to check the weather, so that if you found things were taking a long time to download you could ascertain whether it was due to a slow internet connection. If it was, you could therefore decide whether to re-try in the hopes of achieving a better speed.
Of course I could just as easily bookmark the website instead, but I thought it would be another handy little gadget for OG. |

Ooh! I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or an insult! |

My broadband connection is now 6 Mbps since i migrated to PlusNet. I was with Demon for years but only got about 1 Mbps at the best. They said there was nothing they could do - it was BT's lines because I'm in the sticks and several miles from an exchange. The broadband comparison web sites told me a similar story when I put my phone numer into their checkers. But when I went to PlusNet it was about 3 Mbps immediately. They said I should be able to get 6 and chased BT until I got it! So don't just roll over and accept what your ISP tells you first time!
As for OGFB, the main problem I find is with the very long graphic-rich threads - like the steeplejacks. They not bad to view but when you try posting that can be very slow.

Hmm - I'd better start acting like one then
No more pints of Black Sheep, or packing stern glands or lovingly cleaning my steel toe cap boots. Now it's glasses of Babycham, packing my vanity case and buying some stilettoes (I even had to look up how to spell stiletto)
Nah, on second thoughts I'll stick to being me...
As for Pluggy - maybe he's become unplugged? If you're lurking there, Plugs, do feel free to add your two pennorth. Hope everything's all right.

Draught, bottled, tanker, intravenous drip ... I'll drink it however it comes.
Nice Babycham website, BK. I went all 'girlie' for a moment, there. I didn't know they still made it! Surely something so hideous would be illegal? |
