I thought it might be a good thing to have a topic devoted to this important subject.

I thought the lack of summer was because I had invested in skirts and dresses for the summer. Back to trousers today to see what happens to the weekend.

Best go to Australia for a while Julie if you want to wear the new clothes!
The big problem with getting anything done about alternative energy production on the grand scale is getting planning permission. There are hydro-electric projects in Scotland that have been waiting for about 6 years or more now. Lord knows how long the Severn takes, whichever project is chosen.

All reports that the weather has been a bit wet lately are greatly exaggerated :

Apart from the rain, it's the prevalence of winds in the North. NE wind today...... and rain. Bugger.

At last the DIY solar water heating system is up and running, and what a day to try it out, glorious sunshine all day and gallons of free hot water! ( I know, I know, what about the capital cost...how many years will it take to pay it back. Well it wasn't all that expensive, and if you think of it as a hobby......)

Well done Wendy. Never mind the cost, the savings will get greater as fuel goes up, we have another 20% rise coming before September. Apart from that you have the satisfaction that you are doing your best for yourselves and the planet. Win-win all round I reckon.

We do have some wonderful views, I can stand and stare all day! I'll try and find a picture of our wind turbine (suitable for the topic) which gives you some idea of the view to the west.

We are seriously thinking about it, even a wind turbine. It would be wonderful in France as we face due south and nearly always have a strong cooling breeze plus the space. Here we are not so lucky. We face slightly the wrong way and the neighbours may not be so happy with a wind turbine to look out on.
Bob is busy comparing costings and efficiency and the different sorts of systems. His mum and dad had solar panels in Devon some 20 years ago and never regretted it
Glorious day today. I feel a little gardening and/or painting en pleine air coming on

Sue, have a look at this site which is the Energy Savings Trust. Somewhere there is a site web page that will take your post code and give you a rough estimate of wind in that area and how likely it will be to work a turbine efficiently.
We have up on the idea of solar heating because it's room heating we need, not water heating. So we are having a conservatory put on instead. It will capture lots of solar heat and let it through double doors into the rest of the house - as well as the other benefits!

I've often thought that a conservatory and a fan exchanging air into the house when the teperature in the conservatory is higher than the house makes good sense in winter.
