The Web n Walk USB modem connected to my Apple Mac notebook is pretty good, but sometimes OGFB takes ages to load pages so I wanted to check that I was getting the speed promised by T-Mobile.

I went on several speed checking websites and I'm pleased to say that on average (I did 5 tests per website) I am indeed achieving the 3.6 meg which I should do through the 3G network.

The website below was quite fun to use (I haven't even tried to make it a clicky, just copy & paste into your browser)

http://www.speedtest.net

and I notice that  webmasters can quickly set up a facility on their own websites using some code supplied by these people.

I was wondering whether anyone might find that a useful little addition to OGFB and if so, whether Doc or Ringo could facilitate it?

I think you mean 6,000 down. Perfectly adequate I reckon.

If that's all it is Glo you should start making enquiries if you are on broadband. Mine is almost 7,000kbs this morning. 624kbs is very slow by modern standards.

Well - here's the update. Finally settled for a T-mobile Pay As You Go dongle for £30, with 2.6 GB/s speed and £10 worth of credit, and thirty days free connection.
Arrived today. Connected, but no £10 credit, and no free 30 days. Rang the helpline, who were very good, and on an 0845 number, so not too expensive.  Now the bad news. Best download speed achieved was 24 kB/s. That's not a typo!  Worse than the old dial up modem .
Asked about the speed, and they say I'm in a 2G area, and need 3G for full speed. This will be available sometime next year!
Swift decision, and it's going back. No internet is better then slow internet.  So that's me out of contact and going cold turkey, from Friday, till things settle down. I will miss you all.

Hello everyone again - I'm back from the far side. I settled on Plus net broadband, and though their customer service is poor, (15 minute waits to be connected to a call centre in S. Africa), it all seems to have settled down now. Speed is not a patch on Virgin, but I suppose no non cable system is.
Didn't miss the web as much as I thought I would, but it's good to be back

Tripps. I don't understand about you being connected to a call centre in South Africa. I've never had that - has it just changed, I wonder? But then I rarely phone them because the on-line help has always done the job fine. What speed are you getting?

A couple of weeks ago PlusNet was rated joint best in a survey of broadband providers by The Times.

EDIT: I've done a bit of searching. In 2008 PlusNet took over another company called Brightview which had a call centre in South Africa. Brightview's ISP service was called Madasafish. PlusNet kept the SA call centre with the idea that it would support Madasafish customers. More recently it has been used to deal more generally with things like setting up new accounts.Tech support should still be via Sheffield and you should be able to call customer support in Sheffield if you use thefull phone number instead of the 0845 number.

They would get no awards from at the moment. It is hard to access online help when you have no connection!  Didn't stop them from sending me 11 Emails before I was connected though. Hopefully I wont need to call them again.
All settled down now, and speed at this moment is 5.6 Mbs, which is fine. Slows noticeably on weekday evening though, but not a problem for my usage.
PS just noticed your update - that explains things. Thanks

Microsoft updates are being sent out so don't be surprised if your broadband connection slows a bit!
