I'm aware that I keep hijacking poor old Big Malk's band topic, so I thought I'd better start a new one for ours.

But before I do, I'll just mention that BM's band are set to appear at Rolls in November. There! That's fair, int it?

The Border Patrol played at Allan Buck's inauguration dinner and all went well (no forgotten words/chords etc). We were due on at 3.30pm but the meal was delayed and speeches went on longer than anticipated so we didn't take to the stage till going up for 5pm. Unfortunately our sound engineers had another gig to go to so it was all a bit scary as to whether we'd have time, but big do's and little do's, it was OK in the end.

The guests also had a surprise whipround for Elaine's breast cancer fund, After The Storm, and it raised over £150. (She'll soon be able to hand over a large amout of cash to Airedale HODU and Bosom Friends - details to follow.)

I had my minidisc recorder switched on during the gig, but unfortunately the sound was too much for its little microphone and the distortion renders it unfit for public consumption.

Our band name actually fitted in well with some of the speeches which mentioned Barlick being on the Yorks/Lancs border, have your passport ready, etc. However, nothing is carved in stone and I've taken on board all the great suggestions by OG members.

Big Malk, the stage is much, much smaller than I remembered it. I think you might struggle with your rig unless you make sure they extend the stage area.

You should be playing to an audience more sympathetic than 3 rubber trees, 2 figs, a coleus and some maidenhair surely!

Ahhh there's a palm there! I missed the palm.

Take it all back. Palms are good to play to.

Trouble is they are thin on the ground in Barlick.

Well, I once described special people as rare as walking through a field where cows had been grazing, and when you bent down to clean your shoe, you found a diamond stuck there.

I think they are rarer.
And I think that genuinely good people with a genuinley good talent make the price of gold dust insignificant.

This week I have listened to two songs written and sung by Callunna.
I can't say they are good.

The use of James and Mary Jane engines as an introduction with that typical 'Poverty, Poverty knock' sound that looms are reknowned for, the cutting depth of words with a biting insight into the lives of people that worked 13 hour shifts on the machinery is as sharp as surgical steel, and the simplicity of a song well sung from the place where it counts, makes her singing and her songs better than good.

If you haven't heard her, then you are missing something very special.

John.

Isn't it good when an expert shows the same enthusiasm for something as you do?  I have said before that James and Mary Jane is memorable - nice to hear that JT thinks so too.

He has a"better than good" turn of phrase. I love "biting insight" and "sharp as surgical steel". Topics like this raise this site above the rest.  I think that's makes it egregious.

For anyone that has not got it - the Title is "Bernulf", and the group is "Now Then"  Speak to Calluna she'll sort you out.

John - I have tried to access your music, but only been able to find an old Topic  LP on eBay for over 50 pounds! Have you anything available at Northern prices?

Thanks for the kind words, lads. It's certainly lifted my jaded spirits a bit - who knows, I might even pick up that ol' guitar again.

Thanks for the plug, Tripps. We had 200 copies of the Bernulf CD but they've all gone now. I'm not sure I've even got one on the boat. However, I have unused webspace which might lend itself to uploading the songs as mp3s so anybody can have a listen if they want to.

I doubt whether our CD would raise 50p on eBay, never mind £50! lolol

I know some of the local historians regard the CD as a lightweight and not very significant contribution to furthering knowledge of the past, but I get a kick out of introducing characters and events to a new generation who might not want to wade through pages of factual research just yet.

If it sparks an interest and they go on to delve deeper later in life, then the songs have done their job.

And when I sing them in faraway places then people get to hear about Barlick - try reading a heavyweight volume to them in a bar and I'll bet you'd end up drinking alone... !Go to Top of Page

When Audrey and I finally split up, we shared out the LP,s we had left, which even then seemed a bit daft. There was this belief that they were worth money if we sold them, but heck, I didn't even want to GIVE them away!
I used to look at thes LP's in their sleeves (which were the only good bits) with a loathing.
The second one we made got the worst review I have ever read, and justifyably so, yet it sold more than the first.
When I eventually bought my own house, I found I had no flowerpots, so I used to warm the LP's over the gas stove and bend them into flowerpots. They worked well, the hole at the bottom was great for drainage, but they were a bit britlle.
Please don't think I am being overly modest. I am just being honest.
We were hopeless at recording. Like some people aren't photogenic, we weren't recordagenic.

John. (Honest John!)

Here's an experiment.

I cobbled together a quick website with the aim of uploading some mp3s of my songs. Unfortunately I don't yet know how to get them into a format that everyone can read. It would seem anything less than XP (and of course a Mac) can't access them.

Anyway, here's the link:

http://web.mac.com/heathersheldrick/iWeb/Cally%27s%20website/Songs.html

Blood On My Hands seems to load first, and I must warn you they seem to take a good while to load fully.  They're ready when you can see a long bar under the pic.

If it all goes pearshaped I'll delete this post and go and RTFM...

Well it loads OK for me.  The Latin's a bit of a challenge though. Any chance of translation?

That was quick!  What a service.   Wish I'd copied it now to have a go at translation, though it looked a bit  beyond O level (1957).

Now then, it was a wee bit slow but nothing major, I was really moved by blood on my hands, and the last one about Mary Macdonald....but I am concerned about you saying above you might get your guitar out again...why on earth have you put it away? (Do i have to trawl through your blog thingy to find out?)  Let me tell you as someone who can only apint (I am leaving this typo in as every time I type paint it comes out a pint...freudian or what!?)and write poetry, i would give an arm and a leg (not me writing arm of course!) to be able to make music...what a gift it is and you should be doing it just because you can!!!!!!
Looking at your site made me think you have a great resource for secondary or primary school history (perhaps leave the last song off for the littlies!)...you could (what is the right verb for a canal boat...not sail...probably boat) boat down the canal , and then the school could either arrange a visit to the boat or you could go in to the school, and do the songs, tell em about the canal etc..that way they get canals, cotton and the american civil war all covered in a very memeorable way...fantastic..and even social issues of the day...i can't think of a better way to learn, get writing to these schools and make some money, as well as enriching so many youngsters lives!
