I would like some advice on buying my first  family tree software for MS Word XP. Articles I've read seem to come out in favour of Legacy as it's better on uploading or working with Gedcom files than Family Tree Maker (Ancestry. com). At present my most developed family tree info is on ancestry.co.uk so I hope to upload this info onto my computer. I cannot afford to keep up a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk.  I am also clueless on using such software.

I like the features of the Ancestry webpages, particuarly the bit where you can add stories to your ancestors profile. In my ignorance Legacy doesn't appear to have this feature. I also don't know if I can upload my info from Ancestry to Legacy.  I'm nervous that the Family Tree Maker is very American geared/and or geared to using their subscription services. Legacy also has somes great sounding features, but if you can't add stories to the profiles it misses a lot.

Legacy also seems to be easier to share with people who have email but not family tree software?  Please advice. Thanks so much.

I have now found a way of splitting my family tree file into separate branches. If you use the export filter to add all ancestor relatives, spouses, children and siblings starting from from any given individual and then set the generations tab to a suitable figure it will create a file that can then be imported as a new tree file with a different name. I have tried it and it works.

I currently have a contact via ancestry who needs some information that is in my tree. This will be the way to publish the bits that are required rather than the whole tree with multiple irrelevant branches.

I have always done that - make a geneology chart, export (via Acrobat in my case) and file it in a Family Files folder under the name of the eldest ancestor of that branch - each branch can then be printed off and kept in a file., or can be forwarded to other interested parties via email.
