Media reports here advise of heavy snow, with closures of the M6 in NW England, hardly in keeping with above comments.

Our road is stillsolid snow and ice. We have decided not to go to Burnley via Deerplay Moor or Owd Betts, but to drop down into Bury and go on the motorway and  by pass coming off at Brierfield. I hope Colne Road is Ok

Yes that's right Stanley - the 21st. It reminds me of '63 too - we did not have central heating then, and with 2 small children I resorted to putting the flatley dryer (minus clothes) into their room to warm it up before bed time. The electricity bill was not very nice, but I had to do something, the windows were frozen up inside for days. We lived in Trawden, and it was days before we could get out.

Much more snow here than in Burnley. It was a bit slippery on the roads to Bury but once we turned on to the motorway at Heap Bridge we had a straight run through to Brierfield , and then on Colne Road to Dad's. You could see the grass through the snow there but not here. Even the clumps are hidden. It was great to see all the wild animal tracks running across the fields in the snow, and the scenery was beautiful

Herb, no problems here once you're off the side roads, believe me, I live here!

Last night the thermometer in the back yard fropped to just over 10F, remember it is a micro-climate there and warmer than out in the open but I reckon it was below -12C. This morning it's warmer! About the same as yesterday morning. Weird. The glass has risen slightly to 28.75". No wind, not sure what to make of it but no signs of major snow even thiough it has clouded over. Janet and kids are in the air en route to Manchester so all I want is a quiet day and no surprises for them. They land at 18:30 tonight. They tell me that young Harry is in a frenzy of excitement about seeing proper snow!

Moh! Keeping warm with the Flatley Dryer, those were the days!

Hundreds of people stuck at Toronto airport waiting for flights to UK and beyond, due to flights cancelled at point of origin.  Many will not get out until new years cause all  operating flights are full and aircraft are in Europe.  Great way to spend Xmas.

Almost all routed into Heathrow Herb where the management has been a disgrace. Gatwick is mostly open but LHR only just getting off its knees. God knows what will happen if the forecast snow comes in to the SE! Listening to the shock horror snow reports they are all about Heathrow. Nobody is talking about the vast majority of services running perfectly well. The big snow news ought to be the heavy fall heading for Mr and Mrs Tiz! One small mention on the forecast, that's all. Don't go out! Brew up and watch it fall.

Saw a lot of vision on the news tonight of places, airports mostly, snowed in around the northern hemisphere.  Seems to be the same every year, but going home for Christmas, or away for the holidays, is a big thing for a lot of people.  They've described our weather here in Oz as 'July in Christmas' meaning it's like our winter.  We are normally fearing a heatwave or two by now.

Good luck to anyone's family arriving for Christmas.

Another bitterly cold but beautiful day. There is freezing fog down in the valley, I hope it doesn't come up here again like yesterday. The ponies were like walking Xmas decorations when I went to bring them in, with every hair rimed with frost and their whiskers were solid icicles!
I seem to have caught a bug, all aches and pains and coughing, so I have just made a honey & hot lemon drink laced with a drop or two of whisky to warm me up after being outside. Yummy.

It will be disappointing if they don't. My daughter and partner were flying to Madeira from Manchester at 12.30pm - I haven't heard from them, so presume they got away.

Moh, Janet and family travelled 12000 miles into Manchester yesterday and drove up to Derbyshire with no problems. They are snug as a bug in a rented cottage in Monyash near Bakewell for Christmas. Young Harry has got his snow!

Cold again this morning and I shall look outside to see if the moon is visible at about 7:50 because there is a lunar eclipse, first one on Winter Solstice for 400 years. The weather is changing a little. The glass continues to rise slowly and is at 29" now. Nothing sudden but something is moving!
