Following the recent discussion about chippies in Barlick, I was wondering whether there's merit in creating a new Forum for reviews of local eating out places? And pubs? This would benefit newcomers/visitors as well as locals. I would be happy to write reviews of the local restaurants and pubs - a tedious and arduous task but someone's gotta do it The beauty of a website like OGFB is that several people could comment on the same place - one person's meat is another person's poison - so the reader would get a fair and balanced idea, unlike newspaper reviews which depend on the mood of the reviewer on just one occasion.

Cath went to the Sparrowhawk at Wheatley Lane on Wednesday for a meeting of her book club. Vey limited menu and ended up paying £11.00 for fish and chips!! She also came back with the news that the Bay Horse at Fence has closed down. Boarded up with empty kegs outside - rumours of naughty finances. Nolic

Top notch sustainable cod is very expensive indeed. This is true for all premium fish - turbot, brill, halibut things like that. The Sparrowhawk makes a play of sourcing the very best and employing proper chefs. Given this, they and places like them, will charge upwards of 11 quid for fish and chips in order to make a profit.
The question really is how other places manage to charge much less? I've put my views on this, and what an exhaustive menu can mean, on another thread on 'pub meals'.
Has anyone tried The Bull at Broughton now it's under Nigel Howarth's banner? His first 'over the border' in Lancashire.

I've had lunch at The Bull at Broughton. Interesting twist on tradtional meals. I thought it was reasonably priced and very tasty.

Went to the Sparrow a few months ago - will never go back. The food was awful - after complaints they deducted the price of one of the meals. The chef kept coming into the pub and he looked really scuffy - it has gone downhill since Dan. left - wonder where he has gone.

Thought I'd have a little treat the other day, the board said home made cheese and onion pie etc I quite fancied that. What a disappointment, what I really got was a sort of potatoe tart - soogy pastry on the bottom, some goo which must have been the cheese and onion topped with sliced potatoes. Will not be going there again.

I think they will wake up and realise people are no longer going. Shame if another shuts like the Bay Horse and the one that used to be the Forest in Cuckstool Lane. I bet the Fence Gate owners are rubbing their hands.

Four American friends want to take me out for an evening meal somewhere within striking distance of Barlick. Any suggestions? I think they'd appreciate good English cuisine rather than the ubiquitous avant garde type.

Comrade, Bull at Broughton, Cross Keys at East Marton and Tempest Arms at Elslack all come to mind. Not sampled any recently but they all still have good reputations. Nolic

Bull at Broughton is very nice, serving traditional food "with a twist". Tempest is excellent, wholesome traditional food. A bit closer to home would be Jesters, in Church Street. I've always had good food in there...

Thanks to both of you. I think I'll plump for Tempest Arms, happy memories and it'll suit the Americans, it looks more like a country pub.

May I suggest the Copper Dragon Bistro in Skipton. Open Fris & Sat nights. There last week, superb and v reasonable prices plus ale brewed on the premises. Have a look on their web site, all details and menus on there.

They are coming from the Lancashire side so Tempest will be more convenient for them Buzz.

I would suggest booking a table at the Tempest. It has been quite popular...

Kev, dead right. I got the date and time off Martha and booked about an hour ago. The magic of email for long distance arrangements.
