About the Service The West Yorkshire Archive Service exists to preserve the county's heritage of historical documents and to help members of the public make use of them. Anyone interested in the history of Yorkshire, who would like to discover what written records have survived, is welcome to visit any of the offices of the West Yorkshire Archive Service. The Service has its Headquarters at Wakefield, with district offices in Bradford, Calderdale (Halifax), Kirklees (Huddersfield), Leeds and the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, also in Leeds.
The Service holds archives of all kinds dating from the twelfth century to the present day. More details about the kind of records held by the Service can be found by following the links to individual office pages above. Each office has a searchroom, which contains lists and indexes which visiting members of the public can consult, and where staff will be happy to give help and advice on available documents. The Service maintains a computer database designed to provide a unified index of archive collections held by the service which can be searched via the world wide web and in Archive Service offices.
No charge is made for access to any of the offices of the Service which is funded by the five Metropolitan District Councils in West Yorkshire and forms part of West Yorkshire Joint Services which comprises the Trading Standards Service, Archaeology Service, Analytical Service and Materials Testing Service.
