Hello.  I am an American who has been researching the Landless family for many years.  My ancestor Henry Landless(1820?-1900) I think was born in Lancashire and he died in Philadelphia PA. He was married to a woman named Catherine in England. In  Philadelphia he owned a cotton factory, so I feel sure he was in the line of weavers not coal miners. I have seen information on the intranet about  a William Landless who was in weaving near Colne(?). My great--great grandfather was also a William Landless (Henry's son)---so I am hoping that my missing link  is the Landless family who were weavers in the early 1800s. I also know that around 1890 Henry, WIlliam and Harry(my great-grandfather... then around 10 years old) traveled from the US to visit family in England.  I do not know who they were going to see but I know the boat landed in Liverpool.  I was thinking perhaps they went  to the UK because of a death in the family.

I would be very very interested to hear from anyone who is researching the Landless family and even more interested to hear from someone is is a Landless  .  In the US there are very few persons (probably less than 200) who have the surname Landless.

Thank you;

Marianne Anderson

Welcome Marianne.  It's an unusual name here as well.  I have come across a bloke called Landless in the misty past but can't remember where.  There are two Landless' in the local area, one in Earby on (44) 1282-841115 and one in Barlick on (44) 1282-812502.  Do something simple like give them a call, you never know where it will lead......

One other thing strikes me, did you know that if you go onto the Mormon's family search site you can buy the 1881 census for the whole of Britain for about $30?  Great value, it runs to about 30 CDs and you can search the whole of the country for any given name.  That should keep you occupied during the winter evenings!

The Landless family were well established in Nelson in the 19th and earlier 20th centuries. They had a large foundry and other businesses - I think that there is a book about them in Nelson library.

You can also visit the Mormons website (click on Mormon) and search (& view the results) the 1881census for free.

I think I've seen a Landless Sutcliffe.

The only Henry Landless I can find in the Census Collection is one born abt. 1827.  He lived at Swinden, Gt. Marsden (Nelson) Lancashire - he was a hand loom weaver.  He lived with Agnes Robinson and her 3 sons, he is listed as son, but sometimes the enumerators assumed things which later turn out not to be true.  I cannot find him on any later census's.  There are dozens of Landless families in all the census years living around this area.  Any idea of the year of his marriage?

Thanks guys for resonding so quickly! I have searched the Mormon records and only came up with one Henry Landless born around 1820, but it was another Henry (Henry Robinson Landless who died in Lancashire not the US). The book at the Library in Nelson must be "The Family of Landless" by Gladys Whitaker. It is out of print. A very nice Landless researcher in Australia sent me parts of it . I tried to reach Mrs. Whitaker (in Burnley) as well but she is up in age and did not want to correspond with me. Does anyone know if there are any museums dealing with textiles in the area? By the way I loved the piece on textiles posted on this site.

Overall I have seen many Landless family trees and alot of information in England but I haven't been able to find out for sure what Landless family my Henry belonged to. The Landless's are all related in that area but there were a few Henry as well as WIlliam Landless's. It' s just a matter of finding the right one. The Landless  name hasn't been around very long either--its one of those prosciption (alias or Sept names) that came about in late 1700s.  It was from Clan MacGregor and Rob Roy--but you all most likely know all the Scottish history  much better than I do .

-Thanks,

Marianne

MOH- thank you...gosh what time is is there (its 9:00 am here)? The Henry Landless who lived with Agnes Rushton Robinson died there  as well ...not in the US. That was Henry Robinson Landless.

I am hoping that my Henry Landless is the son of WIlliam Landless who I think owned or managed a textile mill.  Is there an old mill town near you called Wooler? I thought I saw a old business directory listing William Landless in the Cotton weaving business on line somewhere.

Tried to reply earlier but kept getting booted off the site.  Found following on Family Search - Henry Landless christened Colne 16/05/1824 mother Agnes Landless.  Also found a William - cotton and linen manufacturer - but he was born 1832 so no good.  Can you get on to Genes Reunited site? A girl on there called Catherine has a Landless family tree on there  I f you cannot I'll see what I can do to put you in touch. - Maureen

Marrianne, there is a Wycoller near Colne.  One word of advice, in the early days of the textile industry 'Manufacturer' didn't necessarily mean a factory owner, they didn't exist.  A cotton manufacturer was a merchant who put out staple and yarn to outworkers in their own cottages and took finished cloth back.  Dig on the site using the home pge search engine, lots of stuff on here about that.

Manchester Royal Exchange directory for 1912 gives: Charles M Landless, 234 Hornby Road, Blackpool as yarn agent.  George Landless Ltd.  Bridge Mills Nelson, Linen and cotton manufacturers with 418 looms.  Representatives were Thomas M Landless and John R Landless.  Richard Landless and Sons, Walk Mill, Colne. 1,200 looms.  Representatives were Richard and Percy Landless.  William Landless and Sons, Clow Bridge, Burnley.  1,141 looms.  Representatives J W Landless and S Landless.

Hi Marrianne, I live in england and I was born a Landless, my father was born in Lancashire his father was Philip Landless.  As my father had two sisters this part of the landless line stops with us, however my cousin is still a Landless and moved to Serecues New York three years ago and is carrying on our family name in the USA!

I have a huge family tree which goes back all the way to the descendant of James Drummond son of Rob Roy MacGregor.

If you're still interested in finding out more about the english Landless line, please get in touch.

Thanks
