I always thought Gadafi was weird. Looks as though he's flipped completely from what I saw on the news last night. Sooner he goes the better!

I heard a diplomat giving an opinion on the World Service and his opinion was 'better the devil we know'. A lot of Libyan people would disagree with him it seems.

So just to clear up the point, " unearned privilidge" is that something that is passed down, if that is the case  nothing should be passed down  ??? If you have a big semi passed down and you have £200K to bank does that give you an unearned privilidge, that was the point ??
I see that both of you knew immediately what I meant by  Ventriloquist Dummy !!!!
I just love Socialist Republicans I do believe that is what is responsible for the Middle East being in such a mess.
No tricks Stanley I just like to see answers.
See the American People are waking up to understanding how much debt their country is in.
ps Bradders if you think that was a personal attack I really do think you need to grow a bit thicker skin !!
Stanley I didn't mean Ventriloquist's to be in the Plural but if the "Cap Fits" Innocent

Belle ......please tell Frank what an apostrophe means.

I seem to remember it was one of your pet subjects , or was it the comma?....Ha!

Incidentally , the line about the dummy contained four mistakes,I only corrected one . (I wouldn't dream of criticising spelling...I'm bad at it too.)

On second thoughts , I'll do it....

The way you wrote it Frank (ventriloquiist dummy ) means a dummy that can throw it's voice.

By inserting the apostrophe "s" (ventriloquist's dummy) , it means that the dummy belongs to the peson who can throw his or her  voice.

It's got nothing to do with plurals..........I think I'm correct in saying , that would be "Ventriloquists' Dummies"

Or "Ventriloquists' Dummy" if they've only got one between them!
Or "Ventriloquist's Dummies" if there's only one ventriloquist but he has several dummies. Hey, I like this discussion, much more fun than politics!

More seriously, it's looking bad for Libya. Ben Macintyre, who has written a book on Libya and Gadaffi, said on the Today programme this morning that Gadaffi will `put everything on the table', meaning he will use every type of weapon and method he has got to defend himself, partly because this is what he always does and also because he has nowhere to go. The poison gas could come out. The BBC spoke to an oilman who is trapped with 300 others inside Libya at an oilfieldand the locals have stolen their trucks and food and they can't get out. They were asking for a Hercules to be flown in to rescue them. Libyans are asking for the US military to save them. The US and European countries are wary because Russia and China will object.

Britain is sending a frigate in case help is needed. You can imagine how it went at the Admiralty...

Admiral: We've got to protect the Brits who are out there...send the Ark Royal!

Aide: She's scrapped sir.

Admiral: What? Oh, er, yes, right...Send a squadron of Harriers immediately!

Aide: Scrapped too, sir.

Admiral: Oh, right...have we got a gunboat?

Aide: Might be able to do you a frigate, sir.

Admiral: Good man, send orders to the captain now.

Aide: I'll ask him if he has a gap in his diary, sir, he's already got appointments in Egypt and Bahrein. By the way, do you need your personal launch this weekend sir?

Tiz, your suggested dialogue at the Admiralty is probably about right for what remains of our hardware for use in these situations.

I too also fear for what this revolution will have to bear in the short term. I have no doubt that by the will of the people it will be better in the long run but the immediate future is another matter entirely. A man cornered with a wish for martyrdom with maybe still the means to effect some very nasty retaliation is not good news in anyones book.

It may well take further action by existing members within the regime to finish this quickly. High ranking officials are starting to crack and are seeing the writing on the wall and distancing themselves from the leader.

Dodgy situation whichever way you look at it.

Maybe that's the problem Bradders, baby boomers that know nothing and just follow like sheep, rather than immigrants who arrive in new countries and attempt to change things to their way of doing things...with a purpose.

Herb I can't decide if you are saying tradtions are dying because baby boomers just follow like sheep, or immigrants with a determination to change people to their way of doing things are what's behind the trouble in the middle east....would fit I guess.
So glad you got the dummies with the dummies sorted out...and yes we did all understand it Frank but too much of this sort of thing can lead to terrible confusion. "Eats, shoots and leaves" was a recently pulished book about the pitfalls of poor grammar...like us all on here I struggle to type right (boom boom) so my grammar can get slap dash as I am just ahppy if a near approximation has been achieved but it has got me into bother through being misunderstood. The interesting thing is when you are criticising another you have to get the grammar right in order to carry it off.

I must admit I was lucky in my work, I only had to read and put into practice what others had wrote or should that be written ??
My family have never wanted for anything and I have never needed to draw a penny from the State so I am comfortable with what I have achieved, with my limited spelling and grammar.
What I did enjoy was, the people involved knew straight away to what I was referring

Started up two power stations in Libya, Derna on the East Coast  and Torbruk. The average Libyan is smarter than most so they will come through this, and make a better country. Our problem is during the in between phase when Africans start to pour across the Med into Spain and up to Italy and onward into Europe.
Think this may need a Churchill moment sooner than we think  "we will fight them on the beaches" springs to mind.

Belle my comment about boomers was in response to Bradder's comment about boomers and the national anthem.  I did not have the middle east in mind when referring to immigrants wanting to make change, I was thinking more of things like Sharia law, changes to religious holidays and so on.

I listened to one of the old BBC foreign correspondents on R4 yesterday and he made the point that Gadafi isn't as mad as he looks. he's always been a smart operator and stayed in power. He reckoned that it all depends on how much of the army, as opposed to his personal mercenary force, he still controls. All bets are off. The next few days will tell. (There's an American David M Crane, special prosecutor in the war crimes investigations about the 1.5million plus people killed in Suerra Leaons and Liberia on W Service at the moment who says that Gadafi was deeply involved and the present Libyan will have an effect right down the W coast of Africa.)

Oil price still going up as speculators take an interest. World Service has just done a short interview with William Hopper who was a merchant banker at Morgan Grenfell 30 years ago. He hasn't got a very high opinion of the casino banks and said that when he was there, his salary was 5X what his secretary received, now it would be at least 500X. Happy days eh!

Tiz, we listened to the same interview. A Hercules on the adjacent airfield sounded like a good plan to me.

Herb, the black tide pouring over the Med? Nowt new there, most of Spain was populated by  Moslems from Africa. There was also a white tide in the opposite direction for 200 years. Humans are like that, they vote with their feet.

I just listened to the BBC on Libya. Why have we not sent in the RAF ?? because they are currently carrying out an Air Bridge to Afghanistan!!  Plus the fact you can't just send Military Planes into a region of the World that has nothing to do with you.  The fact is the military in Libya hasn't had a complete collapse, so could in effect shoot down a Hercules with no problem at all.
Should we keep the Ark Royal to rescue our citizens who get themselves into dodgy situations ??  The answer to that is a resounding No. She may have been on duty in the Far East or down South so we would need Two Carriers something we can't afford. The two we are building currently will never see service together, No Libya should have been an EU rescue not an individual country one.
Stanley we are talking 100s of Thousands fleeing Africa not a few dozen missionaries. We need a plan if they land here, do we just send them on to Australia, they have the land to accommodate them we don't. Something will need to be done and quickly !!!

And that's just a minor test run compared with the migration around the world that will happen when climate change brings more floods and droughts if we don't do something about it now.

Stephen Hester, boss of Royal Bank of Scotland, was asked on the Today programme how he justified paying out one billion pounds in bonuses when the company had just made a loss of...one billion pounds. His reply was all about how they had to do it otherwise RBS might not be able to attract staff and would lose staff to other companies. In other words, "we do it because the others do it". It was notable that he made no attempt to say the staff deserved the bonuses, no claims of good performance by the staff. So it's  a merry-go-round, we do it, you do it, we all do it.

The RAF do not give prior warning of their intentions to the world in general, nor should the government do so on their behalf. As I understand it, not only have they been but are now on their way back.

Stanley, I have made no mention of the middle east.  My comments have been about  tradition.
