Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

On my list for over the Christmas break, I have:
Change of address's (I arranged with the Post Office that they would forward our mail for 6 months - just incase I forgot something, bit of an overkill probably).
Paperwork, which mostly means 'filing', I've written - Just Do It!!.  Cancel Telstra thingy - message about new phone number - it costs.  Boxes to the dump, find out 'free days' .  About a week ago I rang our local council to find the next date in my street for free kerb side pick up of unwanted (recyclable) items ...  I was told 19th Feb '08.
Get to know new garden - buy a hacksaw.  (It's not that bad, it will prove to be much easier than my old garden.)
Why won't the font change??

All thru the fields and meadows gay  ....  Enjoy

I think Rhydian was the better singer but then he has had training/lessons. Saying that, I don't think his style is 'The X Factor'. I bet he gets a good contract even as runner up. Leon will be a has beent his time next year.

According to the BBC Rhydian is signing a recording contract this week. I don't think not winning will make any difference, he has shown his talent on national TV that's what counts........

I expected Leon to win, I voted for him...I have picked out the winners on most of the contests like this I have watched...Rhiddion did have a good voice , and so did the lady singer who went out in  the round before, but at the end of the day his classical style made him a little less versatile than Leon. i found myself asking which of these people would I want to watch for over an hour? In my opinion Leon would have been more varied and more entertaining. Some of my other predicted winners were Will Young, David sneddon, and the large Scots girl whose name I forget.

Oh No!

Now look.......... I am just about coming to terms with the idea of No pictures of the boat move because of some Macproblem over the photos.....

but all this rattling on about cheesy, manufactured, pop trying to attract the old'uns with its phoney excitement and bunch of squeakling teenagers acting up for the camera!

Don't you people remember your teenager's promise?   ........ "I won't like it if my Mum does!"

It will all probably end up in "Strictly Celebrity, All Star, X Factor Makeover On Ice". Then I really will put my size 10 through the telly!

Just to chuck my bit in, on our last day of term today, one of our Sixth Form girls was fronting a few lads with guitars and drums etc in our main hall, while they were setting up and fiddling with the amps and levels etc, she belted out her rendition of "Over the Rainbow" (Eva Cassidy arrangement) to a backing track. Every bit as good as any on X factor or the like. There are thosands of people who have similar talent and choose not to pusue it to "star" level, some want to some don't. I suppose the TV talent comps do give a platform for those that want to get into the limelight and therefore serve some kind of useful purpose and also make "must watch TV" for millions. At the end of the day some make it and some don't. For my part I'm just glad that the two grinning munchkins did'nt win, that would have been a travesty. Rhydian will get work without doubt, we'll have to see how far the winner goes. Cant remember the name of the winner when Will Young came second and he's done alright for himself. The buying public makes the final decision. Not a lot of love lost in the recording industry.

Completely off topic so to get back on track... "Shiver me Timbers", "Splice the Mainbrace" and "God Bless all who sail in her"

"squeakling"

Of course you won't know this up there, but "squeakling" is an old Southern dialect term, cross between squealing and squawking.
It means: "bloody irritating".
Iv'e known it for as long..........(as I've been making typos!)
